Happy Canada Day -- July 1st

Hi all,

Today is our national holiday -- Canada Day. Lots of folks are celebrating in their red and white attire.

Canada is 152 years old (young?).

Here in Ottawa, a huge celebration takes place on Parliament Hill, including an official program with the Prime Minister et al at noon and a multi-media entertainment extravaganza in the evening, followed by an impressive fireworks display over the Ottawa River.

Here's the view from across the street: Hill cam ? Canada's Parliamentary Precinct - PWGSC

It's not busy now at mid-afternoon, but the lawn will be filled this evening.

Incidentally, this is the same grounds that saw some 100,000 citizens on September 14, 2001, a National Day of Mourning for the 9/11 attacks. We wanted to observe remembrance for the victims and show solidarity with our American friends. For those who might be interested, a Canadian 9/11 timeline is here: Timeline: 9/11 and Canada - CPAC

Happy Canada Day!

- Craig

Happy Canada Day to you too C.A.M. !

I fondly remember the fantastic celebrations during July 1st during my 20-odd years living there!
Grandiose fireworks and great crowds.

Now, this thread isn't too busy, is it? Reason: people are too busy trying to get to the evening celebration(s) and that goes for the entire country too. Of course, some will regret having indulged .... hangover day upon a rude awakening, just in time to get back to work!

Cheers!
Have a great day!

I'm Canadian by descent, but I've never been to Canada some day I'll get up there.

Canada's biggest strength is its snacks and candies.
Snyder's hot rods, Hawkins Cheezies, coffee crisp, Aero bar, jersey milk, original 5 flavor life savors.

But $2 coins?

You've uncovered one of our closest-held state secrets!

$1 coin is called a 'loonie' (the loon is featured on the reverse side)

$2 coin is called a 'two-nie' although it pictures a polar bear. Go figure.

The first time I saw a Canada dollar coin I thought the term "looney" was a reference to the figure on the face.
Then I saw the bird on the reverse...

Presumably, the 10 cent coin is the 'schoonie' and the 25 cent coin is the 'cariboonie'?
