Yep, rain. Very welcome, CFS site shows all fires in Adelaide Hills as under control
Let's hope it continues East.
While I am in no way religious, Amen to that!

Welcome rain in Bendigo this morning. Still no major burns in this area thankfully. Looking at the fire emergency app we do seem to be getting a fire every couple of days. As a group workers on the rail line have been asked to remain vigilant in this area. I just can't understand it.

Hi James

I hope the rain helps to stop the fires.
The start of summer is nothing like we have seen but it has happened before. 120 yrs ago when the first settlers were just here for a little while.
Stay safe

Whenever another fire starts the CFA hits it hard as soon as possible. There are Bendigo volunteers in Gippsland at the moment. It must be distressing for them to come back and have to deal with someones carelessness, or stupidity.

Power to the volunteers of the CFA.

The Smoke Haze here is horrid and we are hundreds of Ks from the fires. It must have been really bad for those of you who are relatively close.

I did note that on a couple of occasions last week, once the big fires around the Adelaide Hills had been contained, when a new fire was reported there were ten plus appliances and several aircraft on the scene. Hit it hard before it spreads.

Keep out of the smoke if you can James, best wishes

Latest news is over1500 homes destroyed but that ranks behind a couple of other bad fires back in history.

What is amazing is the financial commitments some people are making. The rich and famous PINK and Aussies Keith Urban/Nicole Kidman are in for half a million each with Hemsworth the actor a cool million. Also a lady comedian launched a social media campaign that's now above 30 million.

Apparently some big time Musos will play for free like in the LiveAid times.

Difficult times but hats off to everyone locally and globally that are offering help.

Unfortunately ,it's far from over.

It's the animals I feel desperately sorry for - there won't be anyone rebuilding their homes or supplying food. Whole populations will have been wiped out and it will take decades for some to recover (if they ever do).

It's an amazing and generous gesture but I'd like to see some of the millions being raised going to help the wildlife carers. Goodness knows there's going to be enough support for people who have lost their homes from a government that is trying to make up ground for the PR disaster this has been for them, all the while trying to divert the conversation away from climate change.

One of the "refugees " from Mallacoota talked about the devastation to the bird life there. It sounded horrible. Not dying due to fire but smoke and or exhaustion.

I would happily put up a lizard or 2 for a while.

Maybe I also need to put up some nesting boxes

We've seen the best and unfortunately the worst of People during these Fires. Whilst most people have banded together and offer help, there have still been such Lowlifes out there, starting up Scam Donations Funds, and even worse, are the ones waiting for people to leave properties to escape the fires, then breaking in and robbing them , people coming home to find their house survived the fire, but, was robbed. It's sickening.

THen, you see this makes you feel better about people.

Also, heres that map of the fires in Australia, overlayed over a map of the USA, Really gives you a sense of the scale of the disaster here.

WOW, The total area over England, That's almost the entire thing. And we haven't even hit the Traditional BAD part of the Fire Season yet. At least there has been a little rain, not much, but any is good. Hopefully when it does come, it doesn't wash everything away.

Not if the rain causes Landslides, which usually happens when ground-cover and vegetation have been burned away.

Lack of rain has been bad for the water quality. So we now get a double hit with streams and rivers clogging up with silt.
