my guess - types of cooking will lead the pack

this idea came up this morning as I was going through my routine for making coffee I pondered about my obsession with how to do it.

using my Aeropress Coffee - AeroPress - Official Store, Replacement Parts and AeroPress Recipes - reverse method

coffee beans kept in a vacuum container

manually grind coffee beans - 20 grams -

preheat my 15 oz mug with the end cap and metal filter and the " press " part in the mug

using hot water heated to 212 o F

and after the coffee beans are ground start the brew - just enough water ( 208 o ) to cover the grounded coffee

1:20 minutes on the clock

1 minute left put in the rest of the water ( 208 o )

time's up

press into mug

add hot water to fill ( 208 o )

Oh, you meant, outside photography. Forgive my hasty answer.

As a developer, I am obsessed by clean code. That means that if I see a perfectly working code, but not perfectly well crafted (no code is), I -will- have to rewrite it so the code will be beautiful, even if it is completely unnecessary.

Also, if I see a sub-optimal part of the code that could be optimized to gain something like 1 ns on a non-critical part, I -will- have to optimize it, even if it is completely pointless.

I also have a routine for making coffee that involves a LaPavoni lever machine (somewhat pimped up):

1. fill the tank with water and start the machine

2. until the temperature goes up to 70°celsius, make sure the portafilter is clean, measure 14g of fresh coffee and tip it into the grinder (i use an electrical one, but because of costs and not lazyness)

3. release some steam from the boiler (to remove false pressure)

4. (at 70°)grind the coffee beans into the portafilter, distribute the beans unifornly, while making sure no clumps are present and then tamp the grinds firmly

5. at this moment the temperature should be about 75° celsius, now i lift the lever as much as it goes without water coming out, introduce the portafilter, and then lift the lever up slowly as much as it goes

6. wait 5-6 seconds and start pushing the lever to build pressure, 9 bars at first, and the slowly reduce throughout the duration of extraction until about 6 at the end. this should take about 27 to 30 seconds

7. take mental notes on what i did wrong, and set fine tune the grinder for the next one (if needed)

It is about a 20 min operation, but only max 5 minutes of actually doing things. Some call me crazy, but that is only before tasting.

I have a few other obsessions, but this is the most relevant in this case

I have a few, but for now will subject you to this one: after my initial round of one or more rental (hire) car reservations in advance of a trip, I will re-check several times a day and then cancel/re-reserve as prices drop. Sorta like daytrading, but with no downside except my time.

End result: wound up in a BMW 530 for six days, for less than the original booked rate for a Hyundai Elantra.

-Late night,quiet house,usually after SWMBO has gone off to bed

-Low light levels and no other distractions

-Dog on lap,he’s been exposed to my music from an early age,some discs eg Animals by Floyd can be a bit challenging from a sound effects point of view!

-If it’s not a school night a nice glass of red wine or wee dram

-Reasonably high volume levels

-Speakers not headphones

are you using whole bean coffee

remember once green coffee beans are roasted they begin to lose flavor

and ground coffee loses flavor faster than whole bean ( surface area issue )

I hope you use a manual hand grinder

electronic ones can heat up the grounds

Coffee - certainly. I have a well-maintained manual espresso machine, and haven't had even a drip filter coffee (let alone instant!) for decades.
Knife making - a new one, but if you don't get every step right you waste an awful lot of time. Here's my first effort.
Rock climbing - needless to say there is a small margin of error, so attention to detail is a useful survival strategy.

And don't get me started about stacking the dish washer.

I used to be obsessed with my job but it is a lot less after 3 decades. Everyone can open Photoshop will think they are designers now a day, so let it be.

Now I am a kind of obsessed with Stock and all kinds of investment I can get my hand on because I plan for early retirement. Nope, not the crypto.

I tend to be obsessive with my carpentry, woodworking, and metal working. I don't do a lot of projects, but house and machine maintenance will often see me fussing over 1/32" (0.75 mm), or less than 1 degree in plumb or level. My jobs almost always take longer than they need to!

And don't get me started about stacking the dish washer.

So, Sandy, do tell us about the dishwasher. Don't you just throw the dishes in a random fashion... like everybody else does?

1. Efficiency in cost and time
2. Practicality

That makes me want washing loads done to capacity, and clothes inverted inside out to be hung up on the line to keep clothes' colours last as long as possible (our Queensland sun is particularly harsh and bleaching to coloured clothing).
