Sorry to hear this.

If you have homeowners or renters insurance it may cover the loss. I think you need to file a police report before the insurance company will handle the claim.
As someone who had this happened to them, yes, renter's or homeowners insurance will cover the loss, or a portion of the loss, depending on your coverage.

Unfortunately, when this happened to me, I didn't have renter's Insurance >.<

And you're going to have to really shepherd the police through the process. They may not think it's worth their time to investigate, but keep throwing out how expensive that stuff was, and that the market for Pentax gear is very limited. When you report the items as stolen, include as much information as you can, especially the serial numbers. The Pawn shop that the thief took my items to did a pitiful search for the items and came back "clear"; had the serial numbers been in the database, it probably would have come back as stolen, though I have no proof of that, either.

I think it's important to never open your trunk in the same area you plan on parking in (we failed at that this time, as we put a couple of things in the trunk when we parked it).
Thats exactly what I did , someone saw me putting the camera back in .

That really sucks.

I have some 5x8 file cards with the serial numbers of my cameras and lenses on them. I also have photos of the cards on my phone and saved on a backup drive too. This way, I have all the information readily on hand if needed.

I know its after the fact but I hope you had insurance on them? I have a rider on my homeowners insurance that covers all my electronics, including my camera gear . Doesn't matter if I am out and about and its stolen or if I accidentally fall into a lake with it.. supposedly its covered. I specifically talked to my agent about my camera gear coverage. I've had it now for years, haven't ever had to make a claim and hopefully something I will never need.

Sorry to hear you were ripped off !
