Stolen camera recovery!

Some of you may have seen our post this past weekend, stating that our NPO fell victim to an extensive fraud while selling our mast valuable investment, a Pentax 645Z medium-format camera.

Well, in the past 72+ hours, we got a LOT of help from a LOT of people, across the country. Most notably here, on the Pentax Forums, where Adam Oest and Paypal.com jumped in with both feet, every step of the way.

Additionally, the Doral (FL) Police Department immediately responded to our situation, and helped immeasurably. Also, the Grand Rapids (MI) Police Department helped us get our bearings, early on.

Just 24 hours ago, our beloved camera was GONE. And now it's back. And that's because a bunch of different communities of people helped make the impossible happen. And we're deeply grateful.

The package arrived back today, but we took nothing for granted, until we opened it...

Cheers!!!

With all of the fraud and theft these days, it's nice to see things work out now and then.

Kudos to all involved in helping recover your Z.

Thanks to everyone here, who definitely empathized (many from lived experience, with theft.)

We learned a lot from this experience, and we have more to learn, to prevent it from happening again. PayPal has provided some good resources for us to use internally. And we'll try to share the details of our experience, over the coming days/weeks, in case there's any good information (about what not to do, when selling gear.)

It's definitely not the outcome we would've imagined, or allowed ourselves to expect. And it definitely only happened because a lot of good people quickly jumped into the fray.

Right now it's just so, so amazing to have this marvelous piece of equipment back, safe and sound.

Tomorrow we'll do what we should've done from the start - list it here, on the Forums, where there's a real community.

Cheers.

Here's a quick video of the very happy unboxing.

Awesome that you got it back! Why don't you post a photo, taken with the recovered camera, here on the forums? Maybe something about your NPO? And good luck with the sale!

Wonderful news! I'm happy to have been of help.

As a general reminder to anyone doing business online: scammers are increasingly eager to trick people these days. Always verify that a transaction confirmation is real before proceeding to ship, and be very wary of clicking on any links in e-mails that seem out of place. Many scammers will send out fake fraud alerts as a way to lure victims to deceptive websites.
