It is almost certain that no one was.

White Island is a remote location, it is literally an island of 2km diameter; more precisely the peak of a submarine volcano.

At the time it erupted, only tourists and tour staff were on the island.

was there an ash cloud

did it head out to sea or over populated territory ?
