There is a fine line between stockpiling, and hoarding, or worse profiteering from it. The advantage ( so to speak) of a virus over a hurricane, is that normally the water and power and heat will not stop. And essential food delivery will not stop. So you really only need 2-3 weeks of food to be able to self isolate.
Common sense has absolutely nothing to do with the behaviour we are seeing.
