Mrs. Racer 2.0 and I got up early today, and ventured out to get stocked up on groceries. Since we meet the age restrictions we were able to go to the markets ahead of all the rest of the maddening crowd.

While in Costco I saw a huge outbreak of Corona virus.

But I was sure to maintain a six foot safety zone.

This just in from the failing New York Times:
"Coronavirus Live Updates: U.S. Now Has More Known Cases Than Any Other Country
At least 81,321 people in the U.S. are known to have been infected with the coronavirus, more cases than China, Italy or any other country has seen, according to data gathered by The New York Times."

The first reported case was March 5th, a mere 3 weeks ago. I don't see how anyone can say this is no worse than the flu.

I had high hopes that because of the semi remote location I live in that we might somehow be spared the worst of this, but last weekend some efftards decided a "coronavirus party" was in order. Of course one of the idiots turned out to have the infection, I expect that in a week or so we are going to be overwhelmed because of the moronic actions of twits like this.

If it makes you feel any better, a man in South Africa who broke quarantine was charged with attempted homicide.

These people are going to be the end of us, and not metaphorically...

Sorry to hear that, Bill. Frankly, it seems the same type of folks - whether they're outright deniers, those who believe it's not as bad as suggested, or those who are just hell bent on enjoying the last bits of ill-advised socialising at the expense of the rest of us - exist everywhere, though especially in the UK, Europe and North America (from what I can tell). Probably elsewhere too

Good luck, best wishes, and stay safe

The size of the country is irrelevant. Unless the larger country has a much lower GDP per capita, a bigger country has proportionally more resources.

If anything South Korea is at a disadvantage. South Korea has 4X density of New York state and half the GDP/capita and was a lot closer to China than the US.

But, honestly, the resources for early testing aren't that large. In fact, the sooner the testing begins, the less testing that's needed. But it does require early action.

As for Americans not complying with whatever measures are required to save millions of American lives, that's a matter of leadership.
GDP? Really? Since when does GDP determine the ability of a virus to spread?
You might get away with saying that richer countries have the ability to garner resources, but in said rich countries the ability to provide health care is still extremely limited in this situation.

Size of the country in your argument is nothing more that "whataboutism". Singapore and South Korea used social tracking systems that would lead to near revolution in the US. At least Singapore and South Korea had test kits in hand to work with. The US is still struggling with the ability to test even those who are already in the hospital. There are rural hospitals that have spent all of their funds, run out of PPE's and since the state has said "no elective procedures" they have no income. You state the resources for early testing are not large - if you have a population that is smaller than two states. Testing 60 million is chicken feed compared to testing 300,000,000+ especially in that 300 million population you have some who blatantly say screw that - the Gumant ain't telling me what to do.

As for leadership - we sure could us some about now.

triage happens in any ED at any hospital under the right circumstances -

I took my young son into the ED upon his reporting to us a huge pain in his " stomach " and had a temperature

we sat for a number of hours with all that being done was checks on him while we waited

why - unfortunately shortly after we arrived, multiple patients came in with worse problems heart attacks and multiple car accidents

someone else complained about lack of attention they were getting and I said " in an ED, if I am not getting tons of attention, I take it as a good sign "

[ personally I wasn't happy but I did realize what was happening and why ]

the worse off gathers the attention

BTW, they did get to my son, after we had been there for about 6 hours and he eventually got to surgery before his appendix burst

he had no problems after recovery from surgery
An analogous story, my son (aged 4 if I remember) fell over backwards and hit his head on a chair that opened a laceration of about 1/2 inch. We took him to the ER and proceeded to wait for just a little over two hours. We told the nurse at the desk we would just take him home and the nurse told us to wait for the doctor. He finally came out took us into a bay and stitched him up. We asked why the delay? There was a young child in the other room who had pulled a pan of boiling water off the stove over itself. All the doctors/nurses were working on the biggest issue where my son's injury was pretty tame. As soon as he finished stitching up my son, he was back in the room with the burned child.

As long as healthcare resources per capita are similar, the size of the country is irrelevant. I agree that most people in the US (and most of the commonly called "West", to a lesser degree) would riot at the thought of the big bad government asking them - or Heavens forbid telling them - to install a tracking app, and that's the crux of the issue I think.

My comments on whether the governments of certain countries have risen up to the challenge I will keep to myself .

Well, now... I just read the following news headline:
"Don't let coronavirus drive you to drink: World Health Organization warns alcohol is an 'unhelpful coping strategy' to combat stress during lockdown

WHO experts have warned people against drinking during the lockdown
Say it is natural to feel scared and lonely but that drinking alcohol is ill advised
Warn that relying on alcohol is 'an unhelpful coping strategy' to cope with stress"
Thankfully, the coronavirus isn't driving me to drink; I simply enjoy a glass or two of wine. Second, it's not a coping strategy - it's just that I enjoy a glass or two of wine. I consider myself fortunate that I'm neither scared nor lonely... but I do enjoy a glass or two of wine. Lastly, I don't feel stressed, and so don't feel the need to look for ways of coping with that. But, I do enjoy a glass or two of wine on an evening.

Seems this headline has nothing to do with me after all...

Yep. Since testing isn't super widespread, there are many more out there with it.
