Speculation time

what comes next

take a look at what happened before

The novel coronavirus has taken just a few months to sweep the globe. How many will die, how societies will change — those questions are impossible to fathom as the disease rages. But history shows that past pandemics have reshaped societies in profound ways. Hundreds of millions of people have died. Empires have fallen. Governments have cracked. Generations have been annihilated. Here is a look at how pandemics have remade the world.

graphics also does a good quick job of putting pandemics into relation with each other

hint the current one isn't close to being the worse for deaths

new addition to Kansas Governor's Order re " stay at home "

TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly announced Tuesday she was imposing crowd limits on religious gatherings in advance of Easter Sunday, forcing churches to keep attendance below 10 to help avoid the dangerous risk of spreading COVID-19 among worshippers.
The new executive order, effective Wednesday, also applies to funerals. A previous order banning public gatherings of more than 10 individuals had exempted religious gatherings and funerals.

Taking action during Holy Week, the governor said, “brings me the greatest sadness” of all of the unprecedented executive orders she has signed in response to COVID-19.
“Kansans are a community of faithful people,” Kelly said. “We draw strength from fellowship and prayer. We rely on our pastors and our priests, our rabbis and imams, and all of our religious leaders for guidance and counsel — especially at times of sorrow, uncertainty and hardship, and especially during Holy Week.”

Kelly’s action follows three breakouts of coronavirus infections attributed to church events in separate counties. It wasn’t immediately clear when or where those events took place, or how many infections were traced to the events. . . .

Sorry if this has already been posted, it's hard to keep up...

Interesting article, the data is a few days old, but it's still an interesting observation...

Correct.

Two irrefutable points here:
1. The Science: People are going to die.
2. The Political response to the science: Won't change #1
#2 is somewhat refutable. A proactive political response can limit mortality. A lackadaisical political response will increase mortality.
This is being proven in real time.

Fair enough. Maybe after this is all over we should amend it to read "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof as long as its in a manner approved of by the State."

The First Amendment has been at least partially dead to millions of Americans for a very long time.

Plus a sheriff plus a dude who lead an assault into a wildlife reserve. All people well versed in the matters of healthcare.
I read a report about a guy with a PHD ( social sciences type ) indicating he thought he knew as much about the virus as one of the leading MDs on infectious diseases

Oh come on. They are willingly spreading a disease, not peaceably assembling. I'm only half joking when I say that the right course of action is to let them do as they please and immediately afterwards charge them with attempted murder.

"Freedom of religion means freedom to hold an opinion or belief, but not to take action in violation of social duties or subversive to good order" - Reynolds v. United States, 1879 (Pearson Prentice Hall: Supreme Court Cases). The US system works on precedents, right?
It would be very simple to argue that congregations in this case are subversive to good order.

By the way, in the flu epidemic of 1918, Chicago forbade public gatherings (1918 Pandemic Influenza Historic Timeline | Pandemic Influenza (Flu) | CDC). I don't know how they survived without the 1st Amendment for 102 years.

A different Supreme Court might have ruled otherwise. Precedents are certainly leaned on, but are not set in stone.

And let the Mormons file jointly for 5 people? That would have been a nightmare for the IRS! How many tax benefits do you get per wife?

Okay, so let's leave the measures in place in perpetuity. No gatherings greater than 10 people outside of a private residence. If they're saving lives now they'll save lives next year, and the year after, and the year after that, from all sorts of horrible things like flu, AIDS, drunk drivers, drownings, etc. Deaths from virtually every cause would be reduced if people weren't allowed to leave their houses except to go to the grocery store or walk around the block.
Think of the billions of dollars that would be saved in in health care costs.
