I'm afraid that a PhD doesn't give you intelligence (or common sense or humility for that matter), unfortunately. But seeing as I'm a born optimist and could use some of it anyway, I'll report back after graduation to see if it worked. So far I just feel dumber and dumber

And let the Mormons file jointly for 5 people? That would have been a nightmare for the IRS! How many tax benefits do you get per wife?
Note that the decision was 6-3.

Okay, so let's leave the measures in place in perpetuity. No gatherings greater than 10 people outside of a private residence. If they're saving lives now they'll save lives next year, and the year after, and the year after that, from all sorts of horrible things like flu, AIDS, drunk drivers, drownings, etc. Deaths from virtually every cause would be reduced if people weren't allowed to leave their houses except to go to the grocery store or walk around the block.
Think of the billions of dollars that would be saved in in health care costs.
We both know you're being disingenuous. You guys didn't keep the draft going on all the time "just in case of us trying to drop some democracy somewhere else we don't like" (luckily for the rest of the planet...), Chicago didn't keep the public gatherings ban, and you certainly gave the Japanese-Americans their right to peaceably not be put in concentration camps back.

Clearly those three were judges first and tax collectors second (or a distant third)

Quite true.
Intelligence and common sense are neither mutually exclusive nor co-dependent.

And neither of those is related to the level of formal education one may or may not have.

No, actually I'm not.
I'm trying, through a bit of absurdity, to illustrate the perils of:
1. Letting a pendulum swing too far in either direction
and
2. Perhaps more importantly, the danger of allowing any one leader official, at any level, too much unilateral power.

Politics is creeping into this discussion mighty fast... its not even been a day since the last warning was posted.

Statistically speaking the odds are getting higher this thread will get closed.. which is a shame as the subject is extremely important.

There was no income tax back in 1879, and given that Utah was a US Territory (and therefor much less organized than a state), I doubt most folks paid any sort of federal-level tax at all, except for maybe alcohol and tobacco.

Taxation in the US didn't really get rolling until the 20th century

I am well aware; I was trying to bring back some levity.

Correct, and thanks for the reminder.
I'll step back. I hope others will as well.

A different Supreme Court might have ruled otherwise. Precedents are certainly leaned on, but are not set in stone.
a precedent is a prior decision that the majority of the court does not want to over turn

that is all

without courts overturning precedents, the law does not change without legislative action

example " separate but equal " education system in the US

PJV is absolutely right, no doubt about it.

Every human contact is potentially dangerous.
Please note not only contact with other people but also with substances may cause a transfer of the virus.
This corona version is said to survive up to 24 hrs on cardboard.
That makes handling of parcels a possible source of infection

You are correct; on all counts.
For me this raises the question of when to say "que sera sera" and carry on.
