On the bright side during the pandemic..

There are a few Corona related threads on the board right now, apologies for adding another one.but I thought we could use a more uplifting one to offset the more grim ones.

Even when things are bad you can often find some good.

Last night I taught my kids how to make bread by hand..Nothing is more comforting than a kitchen filled with the delicious smells of home cooking.

Today while in self quarantine had a pretty decent day. LOTS of quality family time. Spent a fair amount of time putzing around the yard and not feeling guilty about it as I often do. My son and I shot a whole mess of arrows in the yard. We shoot recurve bows. Been a while since we shot, was nice doing that and looking to doing it more.. of course tomorrow my shoulder may have other ideas.

Did some online shopping for some elders that cant and felt like a champ when I scored some scarce things they needed.

Played in the dirt planting some cold hardy chicory and onion sets. Don't know why but I have always found gardening relaxing.

Got an email from local coffee roasters that my wife and I visited in better times. We had been missing visiting them...and were thrilled to find out they offered free deliveries to local areas.. So we decided to help them out and ourselves.Ordered this morning... they dropped off a few bags of ethopian beans and kenyan beans on the doorstep a few hours latter.... Sitting here sipping on that heavenly roasted wonder called coffee as I type.

My local wine and beer shop sent an email that they too deliver locally for free... .window shopped there a bit.. have to revisit that cart soon. Yard work requires beer for it to be a fullfilling venture and not just work and a good dinner for me likes to be accompanied by a little vino.

SO YES... Things are very bad out there but Im trying to stay positive.. how about you?

Went for a great dog walk in the woods and heath in the sunshine near my home.More people about than usual (observing social distancing rules!) and on the whole people were friendlier than usual,we're all in this together.

just found an interesting ad by a local business

it advocates the benefits of having and caring for plants in your home, starting a garden in your yard, at this time of stress and then invites the community to visit their green houses:

QuoteQuote:

Plants Help Keep You Healthy! Come out and walk through our huge Greenhouses

We are keeping our doors open! Our greenhouses is the healthiest place you can be
I think I will take them up on the invite, using " social distancing " of course

they are open 7 days a week

[ I have met the owners once or twice ]

perhaps a similar local business near you might be willing to do the same, it might be worth a phone call to ask

I keep getting e-mails suggesting I join a local group and socialise with other 'senior citizens' (cheekey beggars, I'm not even seventy yet !). Nice idea (for some), but timing could be improved, I think :-)

define " socializing "

and what "refreshments " are allowed

playing cards, with gloves perhaps, and enough " social distancing " might be enjoyable

poker anyone

consider trying to find an online chess club

or a local one where you might correspond with members using email

chess has been played, historically, by remote players

you really don't need a true chess board, just paper, a correct pattern and markers

If anyone enjoys Chess.. There is another game that is also very very challenging called "Go" .. Its a ancient board game of Asian design... truly a brilliant and Elegant game. There are servers where you can play people online around the world. You can download phone and tablet apps to try out free against the computer.

My part time job is considered essential so my schedule hasn't changed much. What has changed is that I'm pretty much homebound on my off days. I spent one morning replacing the brakes on one car. The weather went downhill so the rears will have to wait. We finished the annual chore of getting our taxes filed. I have a ton of yard work to do once the weather cooperates and the snow is gone. Yes, we are still snow covered with more coming tomorrow.

Cynically, listening to a bunch of people I don't know and don't like complaining about their ailments, their families and everything else they dislike. I have (before the current panic) been taken along to these events by well-meaning friends, but all it has done has re-inforced how much I enjoy my own company, and abominate the company of most others. I am not, by nature, a sociable person, and there would be no question of my approaching anyone so closely that infection could possibly occur.

Some thirty inches from my nose
The frontier of my Person goes
And all the untilled air between
Is private pagus or demesne.
Stranger, unless with bedroom eyes
I beckon you to fraternize,
Beware of rudely crossing it :
I have no gun - but I can spit.

My sister in law teaches special needs kids and now is doing that by video. She assigned one kid to make a video of what he did over the week. At the end of the video, the kid says "if you enjoyed this video, be sure to like, comment below, subscribe and hit the bell to be notified of my next upload!"

On the bright side.. Plenty of family movie nights going on here.. Dare I say its almost "nice" not having to compete for my teenagers time with their friends.

Oh and though its getting harder to find basic things like pop corn for movie nights.. I caved and bought the smallest container of popcorn I could find on Amazon. I am now the proud owner of a life times supply(for me) of popcorn. How much is that you might ask? Twenty four pounds! It was actually a fair price at $22.

There is just something cheery about family movies and popcorn.. even during a pandemic!
