Distributed Computing Takes on COVID-19

Crowdsourced / distributed computing projects rosetta@home and folding@home task the protein analysis of the novel Coronavirus aka COVID-19 aka 2019-nCoV_S aka SARS-CoV-2. (If I've gotten it wrong no wonder )

If you wish, you can donate processing time of your computer or servers CPU and/or GPU the help science understand this virus.

Read a bit about the projects:

Rosetta@home Rallies a Legion of Computers Against the Coronavirus

folding@home
Folding@home takes up the fight against COVID-19 / 2019-nCoV – Folding@home
Folding@home Turns Its Massive Crowdsourced Computer Network Against COVID-19

To join the projects you need to download and install the client for BOINC (rosetta@stone) or folding@home. There are also VirtualBox VMs and Unraid server containers available. Clients available for Windows, MacOS, and various LINUX.

Once you install the clients either create a username or use your existing BOINC or FaH name and select the COVID-19 projects.

@boriscleto has in the past created a PentaxForums folding@home team for statistics. Use the team# 233576 for PentaxForums.

Perhaps someone will create a PentaxForums team on BOINC?

Neat idea. I wish them success.

Anyone remember this one?: A Brief History of SETI@Home - The Atlantic

Starting in the late 1990's I recall many Internet connected PCs with the SETI "screen saver" installed, particularly in academic settings.
I was surprised to learn that SETI@Home Project was only recently terminated in 2020.

Been running folding@home for a couple of weeks using spare cycles on my image processing machine (loaded 2018 Mac mini).

Didn't know that there was a PentaxForums team, though. I've been with Tom's Hardware, even though I don't game. (You don't have to join a team.)

This is a good cause, certainly, and you can join the world's largest supercomputer (highly distributed, of course), currently at about 1.5 ExaFLOPS/sec.

I too have been cranking away with folding@home on our two iMac machines. Wasn’t aware of a Pentax team either, I’ll join up. Donating cycles is certainly worthwhile.

Wow! Folding@home has grown considerably since I joined not long ago. It is now at 2.4 ExaFLOPS, according to Tom's Hardware:

Folding@Home Now Has Dedicated Coronavirus Research Option | Tom's Hardware

Folding for COVID-19 research can now be explicitly selected, rather than being contained within the "ANY" selection.

Might have to let Folding at home use my stuff again.
My heat pump is more efficient at heating the house than my PC but it does get the job done...

Note if you are using a FaH client older than v7.9.6 set the cause preference to "any disease". COVID-19 has priority in this case over the other causes.

Here's a quick link to the team statistics for Folding@home. It appears that DeadDoc and myself are the only ones active. Stats update throughout the day on the hour always but in-between also.

I've been having to wait for GPU work units. F@h mentioned they've been having WU shortages due to a 20+ fold increase in demand but were adding servers when they can.

Once I joined the PentaxForums team, I kept seeing no points, no points, no points... I had to restart my iMac to get the processing engine to assign points to the team instead. Now, points are going to the team.

Yes, I saw you were active on the team. Servers have been having some issues, one of them seemed to be choking on large (>100MB) response files. Seems to be fixed now. Sometimes restarting the client clears up any logjams without losing any work in progress.

Should hit my second million points for the PF team in a hour or so

I'm curious about serothis' setup...
I'm not doing that bad, I have a single gaming video board - but I have no chance reaching his score, even if he's no longer active.
