Fascinating how the meanings of words and phrases become inverted, through misunderstanding or irony mainly, I imagine.
Indeed. The other thing that's odd in South Africa, is "a few". In Afrikaans, "a pair" is "'n paar" but because "'n paar" is also used for "a few" that can mean 2 or 3 or 4, not just 2.

I think in the "ark" section of the bible, it is mentioned "a few these are eight".

Oh no! In the Saffa way, "just now" is usually employed in the following fashion:
Person at service counter: "When will the manager be available?"
Answer: "Just now".

That could mean you may need to wait a few minutes to see the manager or you may have to wait several hours. "Just now" basically means "later".

Strangely, if they answered: "He was here just now" then it could mean he was there a short while back. But the usual use as stated above is a decidedly fluid and vague concept!

If the answer was "now now" then it would mean shortly, as in soon, as in a few minutes, or maybe 15 minutes.
Looks to me like it's some new language, using sounds from English

In the last few years, I've heard people incorrectly substitute comprised for composed. I suppose they're trying to sound smarter, but they're used differently.

The whole is composed of parts and parts comprise the whole.

How many times have you heard "The last will be first, and the first will be last"

But, just once I'd like to be first!

With an official two language system in the past, Afrikaans and English were often mixed in a single sentence - especially with the young. Grammar was also mixed up. For example, "I say for you, stand in a straight stripe." (I am telling you, stand in line)
We often used words such as "lekker" from Afrikaans, which meant tasty or terrific. "Durban (was) is a lekker place for a holiday."

Off-topic, but seeing we’ve strayed into inappropriate usage, there’s one here that many (most) people use in our Photo Contests: “I would like to nominate this photo”. Taken literally, it’s an expression of conditional intent, and not an actual nomination (as in “I would like to buy this camera, but my wife won’t let me”).

I’m always tempted to reply: “Well, what’s stopping you?”

In many cultures you can lead a host to water but you cannot ask them to give it to you. Instead of saying, I am thirsty" or worse, "May I have a glass of water?, you sneak in a "My throat is dry." Hopefully the host will understand that you want water and offer it. However, if they have no refreshment and you ask for it, they will be humiliated or embarrassed if they do not have the means.

“This bad boy” referring to an item....just not a phrase I could ever bring myself to use.

I agree. While prone to hyperbole, I have my standards to uphold.

Worse is just "my bad" -- no nouns, no verbs, no complete sentence, no apologies.

It sounds like something a toddler said and the parents never corrected them. But now I hear adults use it, too.
