No. 40 Gale Sayers has passed

Gale Sayers, the Chicago Bears’ Hall of Fame running back, dies at 77

Gale Sayers, the dazzling Chicago Bears running back and kick returner whose injury-shortened career made him the youngest player ever inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, died after a yearslong decline in health that included dementia. He was 77. , , ,

“If I wanted one (running back) for a season, I’d take Walter Payton. But if I wanted a player for one play, I’ll take Gale Sayers above every running back I’ve seen — whether it be Jim Brown or O.J. Simpson or anybody” said Johnny Morris, a teammate of Sayers' for three seasons in the mid-1960s. . . .

The local paper ran a story about the Syracuse vs Kansas game in 1964. Kansas visited Archibald Stadium that year ans Sayers had an average game, but fellow NFL Hall of Famer Floyd Little had the game of his life. Floyd is currently battling what is likely terminal cancer.

Brian's song immediatety played in my head. My first favorite football player before Joe Namoth. I remember getting stickers when my parents got gas like green stamps buying groceries.

The stickers were at Sun Oil, Sunoco and Dx stations.
