RIP Bob Gibson

QuoteQuote:
Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Gibson died Friday at age 84, the St. Louis Cardinals confirmed to ESPN.Gibson, who was born in Omaha, Nebraska, played all of his 17 MLB seasons with the Cardinals, from 1959-75.
Gibson announced in July 2019 that he had pancreatic cancer.
The nine-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion earned 251 wins, struck out 3,117 and had a 2.91 ERA, and was also known as a fierce competitor who rarely smiled.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner was named the World Series MVP in their 1964 and '67 championship seasons.
In 1968, "The Year of the Pitcher," Gibson made a case for one of the greatest seasons ever produced by a starting pitcher. He went 22-9 with a 1.12 ERA and 13 shutouts, leading to the pitcher's mound being lowered from 15 to 10 inches. Gibson completed 28 of his 34 starts.
Gibson's death came on the 52nd anniversary of perhaps his most overpowering performance, when he struck out a World Series record 17 batters in Game 1 of the 1968 World Series against the Detroit Tigers.

Bob Gibson, intimidating Hall of Fame pitcher with a blazing fastball, dies at 84

. . . “Bob wasn’t just unfriendly when he pitched,” former teammate and Hall of Fame manager Joe Torre once told the New York Times. “I’d say it was more like hateful.” . . .

Mr. Gibson was among the best. He won at least 20 games in a season five times and led the Cardinals to three World Series, winning two. He is ranked by baseball historians as one of the top 15 pitchers in history. . . .

His 1968 season, in which he had a record of 22 wins and nine losses and a minuscule earned run average of 1.12, the lowest in baseball since 1914, is considered one of the game’s greatest performances. . . .

His longtime catcher, Tim McCarver, who later entered the Baseball Hall of Fame as a broadcaster, recalled Mr. Gibson’s 17th strikeout, as Tigers slugger Willie Horton took a called third strike to end the game.

“I heard him let out a frightened gasp,” McCarver wrote in his 1998 book “Tim McCarver’s Baseball for Brain Surgeons and Other Fans,” “because he thought that ball was going to hit him. It must have broken eighteen inches in order to cross the plate.” . . .

Ardent Cardinals fan for over 60 years.
Cardinal Nation mourns his loss, coming on the heels of Lou Brock passing last month.
August, 1970 Bob pitched a complete game of 14 innings to beat the Padres 5-4.
In 1967 he pitched to 3 batters after getting a broken leg from a Roberto Clemente line drive.
One of his sayings was: Half of the plate is mine, your job as a hitter is to figure out which half.
RIP Gibby.
