I'm the OP and I agree.

Really some wonderful photography by posters in this thread, of areas of and around the places they live. Makes you think that really, there is always something of interest to photograph around the house, around your property and nearby.

It makes you wonder if only people who live in photogenic areas buy cameras.

I think the area where I live is the only reason my photos are any good...

Subject matter is a good percentage of what makes a good photo for everyone.

or.... do people who buy cameras make their homes more photogenic through the photos taken?

I mention this simply because I do not live in what would be considered a 'photogenic' location....

I live in the PNW too, in between PDL and Stevebrot. The list of what's photogenic around here is a long, long one. Mountains - we have rolling hills as coastal ranges, we have the Olympics formed as ancient seabeds got smashed up into the edges of North America, we have the Cascades with some of that history overlain by several generations of volcanic mountains (they tend to only build up a couple million years and then erode down for a few more around here). We have the Columbia River Plateau, a layercake some 15,000 feet thick, built up from hundred of individual basaltic lava flows some 15 million years back. We have temperate rain forests, ocean beaches with spectacular sunsets, islands and inlets and estuaries of all sizes. We have whales and marine life sharing our space, we have boats of all descriptions as subjects, all kind of sports both indoor and outdoor. I could get to any of that within a few hours drive. Oh, and lighthouses, lots in the area!

My favorite, though, has to be going out on the Sound in my kayak and shooting The Mountain (Rainier, one of the aforementioned volcanoes, nearest geographically). Our little Harbor has a pretty nice view too.

I took an early retirement 10 years ago to a sleepy'ish place an hour from Sandy..... Goolwa (South Australia).... river meets ocean.... not a bad place to do things at my speed (mostly slow these days that is). Goolwa just happens to be a "Cittaslow" town.... so I am right pace right place.

At Goolwa.... we love active lifestyles..... out getting the fish and chips.....

There's the busy beaches....

Old ladies can walk safely...

Always time to take a quiet pee.....

We only sail when it is calm.... so as not to spill the drinks....

A place where Old fellas can still get it up....

I tried dawn once... not my thing... a bit glary...

Yes... we have wind

Wonderful set of photos. That first one really hit me--it's been decades since I fished a beach and that really captures the feel.

I live on the coast in southern Spain, so I have access to wonderful sunrises and sunsets as well as photographing the typical small towns and white villages that exist here. We have a lot of sunny days here so the light is very bright and strong, so the best times to shoot are often are the mornings and evenings as the overhead direct sun is too harsh. I also do real estate photography so have to use HDR to balance the extremely strong light that enters the properties. I use the K-70 and a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 and am pleased with the results.

You get those big skies for storms !
Some areas can be a bit more challenging, no doubt.

The other photographers in my area told me I'd have to improve quite a bit, or move away.
