I can think of several things to watch that are nearly as informative and much more entertaining. The Simpsons and King of the Hill are just a couple that come to mind.

In this country, it seems there are groups, on each side of the political spectrum, which join normal political " free speech " peaceful lawful activities with the sole intent to cause violence and destruction

Well that sucks. Hope things work out and you can finally make the trip. Stay well!

Where is the line between bias and judging what is most important for the readers to know? They are two different concepts, of course, but they no doubt interact in the minds of journalists and editors, and it’s probably more critical to recognise when someone decides what is important for the reader to not know.

This year - and especially this last few months - I've stopped watching and listening to TV and radio news broadcasts and magazine programmes. All they seem to peddle - well, 95% of it - is shock stories, sad events, fear and uncertainty, etc.. and if it's not that, it's sentimental and/or bitter-sweet stories designed to pull at your heart strings.

My mother in law is in her mid 80's and is a retired nurse. She supports vaccination but even she has said how awful the television and radio is. News is about the 5 W's and 1 H -- who, what, where, when, why & how. When the media throws in a side dish of moralizing and finger wagging from some expert, that's bias. When the media doesn't cover the 5 W's or downplays some of them, that's bias. And my MiL wasn't talking about internet trolls and conspiracy theorists, she doesn't have a computer. She is talking about Canadian mainstream media.

My youngest had his booster shot 2 days ago, his 3rd Pfizer shot. He says his arm is sore and can't lift it above his head. At least he's fully magnetic and the nanobots are ready to accept instructions from Billion$ the Gate$ on the LTS/5G waves. Oops... inside voice. I swear the 'bots made me do it.

Egads, I need to watch Fox News and Saturday Night Live to end up with a balanced view of the world.

My daughters boyfriend's COVID rapid test on Christmas Eve came up positive.
As of this morning they hadn't received the results of the PCR test from the lab.

My daughter is at the boyfriend's place while they wait. She is sleeping on the couch.
They are staying masked and keeping apart as best as possible in a one-bedroom apartment.

My wife's aunt is elderly and has a history of asthma, so better safe than sorry.
Pending test results and weather permitting we may try again in a week or so.
Sorry to hear that, Chris

Here in the UK, a record number of 122,186 positive tests were recorded on Christmas Eve. I guess a lot of family get-togethers didn't go ahead as planned, or were missing some members.

My anti-vax cousin came to see us on Christmas Day afternoon and we stood in the garden chatting for a few minutes before sending him on his way with a box of Christmas lunch food to re-heat. I'd rather he'd been able to spend the day with us, and stay over for Boxing Day too, but... well, he's chosen not to have the vaccine, as is his right, and that means he can't come in. And now I hear that my nephew (his son) who we're very fond of has become anti-vax too (having previously been vaccinated twice) and he's declined his booster... which means, for the time being, he won't be able to visit indoors with us either...

It is very strange how people fall into that trap (whatever it is).
I know a few people where I could not grasp that they fall into it.
Well .... my booster will be tomorrow if all goes the right way.

I think it is too soon to know. The early data is out of South Africa which has a very young population (only about 13 percent over 65) and has had most of the population get Delta fairly recently. We already know that if you are young and have had a recent COVID infection (or are fully vaccinated) that you have milder disease from COVID than if you are older and are unvaccinated. I just don't know how it will affect people who are unvaccinated/haven't had COVID and are older.

The only thing we can say for sure is that it is more contagious and it doesn't seem worse than previous strains.

If you dislike "The sky is falling!" sensationalism IMO one might want to avoid the all-news and opinion cable outlets AND local newscasts.

For more thoughtful journalism I recommend hour-long national TV news programs such as PBS NewsHour, BBC World News, DW News etc.

That said I get most of my news from radio, i.e. NPR's Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

not sure what you are relying on but -

lesson to be learned - do not rely on press releases:

Fact Check-Study did not conclude that people who have been infected with COVID-19 are protected for life

A study published by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis did not conclude that people who have had COVID-19 are protected for life, despite claims made online.

The study cited as proof on social media that infection leads to life-long protection from COVID-19 was released in May 2021 in the journal Nature is viewable here [ https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03647-4 ] , , ,

A blog post citing the study was published on Dec. 21, 2021, with a headline that reads: “If You’ve Had COVID You’re Likely Protected for Life” . .. . Users referred to a press release published by the university which did indeed say that the study found that people who had a mild illness developed “antibody-producing cells that can last a lifetime.” . . . In the press release released by the university, senior author of the study and Associate Professor of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine, Ali Ellebedy, said that these cells are “quiescent, just sitting in the bone marrow and secreting antibodies. They have been doing that ever since the infection resolved, and they will continue doing that indefinitely” [ https://medicine.wustl.edu/news/good-news-mild-covid-19-induces-lasting-antibody-protection/ ]

Ellebedy told Reuters that the study did not show nor claim that people infected from mild SARS-CoV-2 infection are protected for a lifetime.

“Having detectable antibody response in blood for life does NOT equal being ‘protected’ for life. Not all antibodies are protective especially if the virus they are raised against is constantly changing,” Ellebedy told Reuters.

I have known a bunch of people who have gotten COVID a second time. My six year old daughter got it twice in six months time.

It seems pretty clear that people will need to make the decision to either (1) Get COVID every year or two or (2) Get periodic boosters. The boosters seem safer to me.

It is interesting that the CDC is shortening the time that people need to isolate to just five days. After that people can return to normal activities, just wear a mask till the ten days are out since the beginning of symptoms.
