Big News on a different vaccine

QuoteQuote:
WHO endorses first vaccine for malaria

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday endorsed its first vaccine to combat the most deadly form of malaria among children, in the hopes of reducing the hundreds of millions of yearly fatalities among young Africans.

The international health organization recommended that children living in areas with “moderate to high transmission” of P. falciparum malaria receive four doses on a schedule once they are 5 months old to prevent the disease.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom called the announcement a “historic moment,” saying the vaccine manufactured by British company GlaxoSmithKline could save tens of thousands of children’s lives.

“The long-awaited malaria vaccine for children is a breakthrough for science, child health and malaria control,” he said in a statement. “Using this vaccine on top of existing tools to prevent malaria could save tens of thousands of young lives each year.”

WHO backed the malaria vaccine after seeing data from an ongoing pilot program involving more than 800,000 children across Ghana, Kenya and Malawi since 2019.

The results so far determined that more than two-thirds of children who are not sleeping under a bednet “are benefiting from” the vaccine. The pilot program also found a “significant” 30 percent reduction in deadly severe malaria.

The pilot program plans on continuing to study the effectiveness of the fourth dose and the “longer-term impact on child deaths.” . . .

Personally, I do think there are some serious but rare side effects of vaccination. They typically aren't deadly, but they can be pretty significant. At the same time, COVID is much, much worse and there is no question in my mind that vaccination is the better route to go.
I think this is also compounded as Covid discriminates against the elderly and the adverse reactions to vaccines appear to be more prevalent in the younger.

The state of NSW in Australia hit 70% fully vaccinated (people over 16 yrs old) yesterday and is in the high 80's for first dose. Nothing like an outbreak to incentivise the jab. We have been struggling with Delta for about 3 months with various restrictions - cases peaked at about 1400 per day but are now down to about 700. Expected to hit 80% in about 2 weeks. 3 months ago when the outbreak started we were less than 20% vaccinated.

That's good news. Hopefully some reputable health organizations will endorse it as well.

That is fantastic news. A malaria vaccine is very, very overdue. Malaria kills over 400,000 people, mostly in Africa, per year.
It killed a friend of mine.

I hope the vaccine hesitancy built up since the release of those for COVID is not contagious...

Daughter got a call today from our county's health department, they cleared her fit to go back out in the public.
I came back negative for delta after spending over a week in the same house with her, if moderna ever needs a booster, sign me up.

I saw a news bit just yesterday that said the home test kits were generating a large number of false results.

Hundreds of millions?

Every year?

How can that be possible?

Are there actually hundreds of millions of children in Africa?
