RIP Prince Phillip. Prince Phillip and the Queen visited our province (Manitoba, Canada) 10 times (according to our Premier) over the decades. I recall seeing the Prince and the young Queen in the early '50's just after she became Queen. They were in a parade in an open (convertible) Cadillac, surrounded by Mounties , going down one of the main streets in my burg. I was about four years old and was there with my parents, grandparents and sister, watching the procession go past. One of my earliest memories.

Later on in the 1990's, the Queen and Prince Phillip visited my city and they were given a boat tour on the Red River, which runs through the city. Unfortunately the outboard motor conked out and the had to be rescued by lashing another boat to the broken down boat to get Prince Phillip and the Queen back to shore.

I always got a kick out of his sense of humour, and admired him for his public service and military service in the Royal Navy during WW2. A fine man, who will definitely be missed by many.

Well , I am not a Royalist , he was married to the Queen so should he be treated as a King?
Sounds reasonable to me.

On the other hand the Republic is coming to Australia sooner rather than later.
The Queen Elizabeth keeps royalists alive here , after She goes.... who knows?

Prince Philip made many visits to Canada, actually more visits than Queen Elizabeth. He was no stranger to Canada, having visited all regions.

He held honorary appointments to several Canadian military units, including his long-serving duty as Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Canadian Regiment.

As the patron of the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards, he challenged and fostered youth to achieve their very best.

The National Flag of Canada will fly at half-mast on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments in Canada and abroad, from today until sunset on the day of the funeral or memorial service.

Our neighbour's son got a Duke of Edinburgh Award. Was rightfully very proud of it. He is now a member of the RCMP.

Afraid not.One of the (many) anachronisms of our monarchy is that, whilst the consort of a king is known as a queen, a queen’s consort is a mere prince!

And the reason is that in patriarchal societies a king always trumps a queen, so a queen cannot have a king by her side.

Yet the Queen could have made him King Consort that would have made him King, but she would have retained power over him. She just chose not to.

Somewhere on the ABC (I can't find it now) there are 21 because of his position and another 20 because the salute is taking place in a royal park.

Apparently.
