Been watching them for a few weeks now. Pretty fascinating stuff that really draws you in. Some feeds have comments and lots of videos posted. Amazing how many people are wandering around the very edges of the lava flow. Some whole families. It is estimated that some 30% of the population of Iceland has been there.


Of special mention is BOBCAM2. A remote camera that like the Centurion in Pompeii stood to his post to the bitter end. (BOB is the unofficial name of the first cone. Short for Blasting out Basalt)

I’ve been following this too, like the last Hawaiian eruption. The various experts say things like the vents are slowing down and it’ll be over in a few days, then the ground opens some more and it just keeps going, so vulcanology seems no more exact than horse racing. The dynamics of the lava flow are fascinating, as are the antics of the spectators: I keep wanting to shout “That stuff’s HOT y’know!”

I have been watching it for hours at a time... Many thanks to RUV.is (national news agency) and mbl.is for hosting and making available the live streaming web cams! There are quite a few locals who are going out to the site and shooting incredible footage from the ground and with drones. One, in fact, ended up with his drone losing its control signals but not the camera feed, and we witnessed its end as it flew directly into one of "Bob's" vents... Good channels: The Reykjavik Grapevine, Daily Iceland, GutnTog, and Viðburðastofa Vestfjarða... Lots of others, but many of them are ripping off these guys as well as the public feeds.

As a geologist by training if not by work, and a lifelong volcano nut - I wish wish wish I was one of those tourists standing there watching Surtr at work...

Incredible that we can sit comfortably in our living rooms and watch live volcanic eruptions happening. I like seeing how quickly the lava cools into a black crust, only to watch it split open to reveal more hot lava beneath.
