Christmas Shopping and Gift Cards

A Friend of mine sent this to me and I thought it would be worthwhile to post it here.

Christmas Shopping - IMPORTANT INFO - Don't be taken.

I wanted to give everyone a heads up that if you tend to give gift cards
around the holidays, you need to be careful that the cards will be honored after the holidays.

Stores that are planning to close after Christmas are still selling the cards through the holidays even though the cards will be worthless January 1. There is no law preventing them from doing this. On the contrary, it is referred to as 'Bankrupcy Planning. Below is a partial list of stores that you need to be
cautious about.

actually I did use my CC gift card (got it for free from them when they did not have some blank DVDs in stock - they gave me some equivalent set + gift card for $25) on-line _after_ they filed C11 - it worked... not that I am saying that you need to buy gift cards from them.

No reason why a gift card would not be accepted while stores are open. They only become worthless once all stores in a chain have shut down.

As for CC, chapter 11 bankruptcy means a reorganization, not going out of business. Doesn't mean CC won't ultimately fail, but their intent as of now is to survive and continue in operation, and I hope they succeed. Because competition is good.

Ed in GA, wow! that's a lot of companies downsizing or going belly-up...

Interestingly, even the company that does rebates for Canon USA has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition last week...

To the OP and everyone else reading this thread. Please, before making conclusions, investigate a little about the information given. Most of the time, such information is incomplete, innacurate or misleading.

In this case, while most of the information given may be true, there is also the fact that is incomplete.

If you really care about it, please read here: snopes.com: Store Closings and please, read all the way towards the end where you will find full explanations of every case (store brand) cited.

You will discover that what is happening is nothing different as "business as usual in the USA".
