Dog lovers - how do you transport the pooch ?

I love dogs

we currently have a German Shepard Dog and a Japanese Chin [ we have had several Labs, another Japanese Chin, an English Springer, and a Brittany in the past ]

when we transport both or just one in the car, we always have the dog restrained in a crate/kennel

for its [ their ] protection and ours

but I see other pet owners do it different

how do you do it and please tell us why

crate/kennel

keeps dog secure, cannot physically distract driver or other passengers

There is a option missing here, related to the size of the vehicle you use

We have a golden retriever, weighing in at about 90 pounds. Our daughter has a second one, they two of them occupy the entire back seat of our 4x4

Actually since these dogs have never been crated the only way is to leave them unrestrained. In my experience, large dogs will be of one or two types, they either lay down and sleep, for which any passive constraint is not really possible, or they sit and want to look out the window. Ours is a “sitter” our daughters is a “sleeper” when going on long trips.

Short trips to the park, they both sit.

If people are going to passively restrain them, the only way is a full harness for the dog, so that in an accident, any forces from the restraint are on the body not the neck.

Our cockapoo is put in a harness which attaches to a seat belt in the back seat for his (and our) safety.

In the UK Rule 57 of The Highway Code states

“When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.”

I got me one o' them li'l pick-em-up trucks designed for hauling around laborers, so it's got a back seat. I put an old blanket over the back seat and the dog rides there, unrestrained. In a front-end collision, she's going to be thrown about a foot into the back of the front seat, and I figure that's no worse than what would happen if she were in a cage. She's sixty-eight pounds of "pit-fox bull-hound" and is not going to be climbing around in the truck, much less sitting on the driver's lap.
Only problem is, I can't take much in the way of photographic equipment when I've got the dog out for a drive, since my backpack and tripod generally occupy the same space as the dog would. I figure that's no problem really, since I can't pay attention to whom the dog may be jumping on while I'm taking pictures, much less keep her on a leash.

If it's just the pup and me, she is belted in the passenger seat. If my husband is there too, the pup is relegated to the back seat, still with her harness and seat belt. I love the doggie seat belt as it gives room to move yet keeps her secure.

We drive an SUV (RAV4) and the dog's in the rear compartment behind the back seats. The space is open above the seats (an earlier car of mine before the dog had a metal dog guard above the seats). So I guess this is technically non-restrained.

I have the back seats of the truck folded up with a couple of dog beds spread across the floor for the dogs. A cargo net behind the front seats keeps them in the back.

When little, we transport the dawgs in a crate. When they are bigger and we're in my wife's SUV, normally free in the back with seats down in cargo mode. If in my pickup, buckled into harness in the back seat. Pickup rides are almost always short singe dog trips to the vet. SUV rides are usually 2 or more of them and any distance. Did not vote because it isn't multiple choice
