Facebook Traffic Soars
July 6, 2007
-By Mike Shields
Since Facebook opened up its doors to the general public last September, the site’s traffic has exploded. And its been invaded by tons and tons of old people.
The social networking site – which until last September was restricted to students - saw its unique user base soar to 26.6 million users as of May 2007, up a hefty 89 percent year over year and more than double the 14 million users the site claimed prior to the lifting of all registration restraints, according to a new report issued by comScore. And perhaps most surprisingly, close to 40 percent of Facebook’s audience, or 10.4 million uniques is now 35 and over. That’s nearly 3 million more users than the 7.8 million 18-24 years olds that frequent the site.
However, neither the core college-aged user base nor the 35 and over crowd exhibited the largest percentage growth since the site’s boundaries were lifted. Instead, it's been the slightly-older-than college crowd and those approaching adulthood that showed the biggest audience gains. The number of adults aged 25-34 visiting the site surged by a whopping 181 percent, followed closely by 12-17 year olds, which grew by 149 percent, found comScore.
“Since the decision to open registration to everyone, the site has seen visitors from all age groups flood the site,” said Jack Flanagan, executive vp of comScore Media Metrix. “As the overall visitation to Facebook continues to grow, the demographic composition of the site will likely more closely resemble that of the total Internet audience.”
As it grows in size, Facebook is fast becoming one of the stickier sites on the Web, said comScore, a condition that should only continue now that developers and media companies have been invited to developed widgets for the property. Page views increased from 6.5 billion to 15.8 billion from May of 2006 to 2007 (plus 143 percent), while the average minutes spent per visitor on the site shot up from 138 to 186 during the same period.
