I was traveling in Europe 10 years ago and the France England ferries combined with a train were pretty cheap. Slow, but might worth looking into.

I did that 35 years ago, going from London to Paris. It was an overnight thing for $25.00.

Ferry: Dower-Calais.
Much more oportunities to shoot pictures than sitting on an airplane (or going through a tunnel).

Flying is going to be the cheapest option seeing as you gave no specific location in Europe. As long as there is a direct flight, costs are reasonable (especially if you can book in advance), there are quite a few bargain airlines operating in Europe.

If you are driving, Calais-Dover ferry is the cheapest option.

Don't forget your passport/visa when you take the swim.

Apparently, goose grease is proscribed as an aid to keeping warm in the English Channel/La Mer.

Ryanair or easyjet.

Other options include an all in one multi city ticket using a large carrier like Lufthansa or whoever you are heading over with.
