Among the dream photography jobs out there, being the official White House photographer would definitely have to rank right up there, regardless of who is President. The current WH photog, Pete Souza, was also Pres. Reagan's WH photog, and
he gave an interview to NPR that I think you'll find interesting. The story includes a gallery of amazing shots Souza's taken of Pres. Obama while Souza covered him before the election. I especially appreciate how they're all in B+W. There's an audio clip of the interview where Souza discusses what it's like being in top secret meetings and knowing when he's no longer wanted in there.
I also liked this story from his days in Reagan's White House:
Souza recounts a story from a trip to Russia with Reagan. He shot photos of Reagan as the president toured Moscow's Red Square with then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Gorbachev introduced Reagan to various tourists, who asked the American president pointed questions about subjects such as human rights in the United States. Souza says he remembers turning to one of the Secret Service agents standing nearby. "I can't believe these tourists in the Soviet Union are asking these pointed questions." The agent replied, "Oh, these are all KGB families."
Some
blogs are speculating that the photo below, taken on that trip, pictures Vladimir Putin, then-KGB agent, posing as a Soviet tourist with his family meeting Pres. Reagan. (possible Putin at far left)
Makes the stuff most of us shoot seem boring by comparison, doesn't it?
