photographing skid row

Well I don't usually hate places... but if there is one town that I cant stand, it is the parking lot known as Los angels ...

any way these photos made me want to go just as a photographer

Just for the record, it's actual proper term is Skid Road.

skid road
1 in lumbering, a trail along which newly cut logs are skidded
2 a) [West] a section of town where loggers gathered in taverns, inns, etc.
b) skid row (C)1995 Zane Publishing, Inc. (C)1994, 1991, 1988 Simon & Schuster, Inc.

skid row
a usually run-down section of a city frequented by indigent alcoholics, vagrants, derelicts, etc
(C)1995 Zane Publishing, Inc. (C)1994, 1991, 1988 Simon & Schuster, Inc.

In any case I thought all such places had been bulldozed down for tacky shopping malls.

I've been there when I was doing volunteer work in downtown LA at one of the local children's shelters. The whole story behind the naming is pretty harsh. I've heard referred to both Road and Row. It was named as such because the City decided to "clean" the street with fire hoses and it cased the homeless on the street to skid down to the bottom. Like with all cities skid row is only a handful of blocks away from the opulent business and jewelry districts of LA. It is pretty jarring to see the quick shift from wealth to poverty.
