I have once been asked if I was a journalist taking pictures for a newspaper... Strange as I was just using a small istDS, probably with a sigma kit lens.

The camera comment is natural, if you think your pentax is a good camera too then you agree, right. You can say, yeah it is a pretty nice camera.

I also dont get why some people take it so seriously. And as people have said, its never meant to be offensive so getting annoyed about it just makes you seem grumpy

It really is more than just getting annoyed by the comment in particular; I just brought back a bunch of bird shots from the weekend and not one but several people commented on how they wish they had a camera like mine so they could get the same shots. Hell, last time I got a bunch of bird in flight shots using an old 10D... I'd *like* to think that spending 15 years doing photography as a hobby has *some* impact on the shots, but to these folks it's all about the gear.

these people that said they wished they could get shots like yours, do they also have extreamly high quality telephoto glass, and the ability to shoot at super high speeds without flash?

to some one with a pocket point and shoot, any telephoto shot made with an SLR, even by the worst of photographers, is going to come out better.

so yes, it is the equipment, you could not have done it otherwise, otherwise you would have gotten the same the same results as the PS people.

atleast you wouldnt get an 8X10 out of it where you can make out the details in the birds feathers.

I get asked all the time if I work for a local newspaper, I just tell them I work freelance and occassionally submit to papers, normally they want a photo taken.

I got asked the other night if I could take a photo of the moon from halfway out on the Sandgate pier (in some of my photos.) Only problem was THERE WAS NO MOON! It was new moon!

Come on James - you have to get more gear so you can get the new moon as well.

In these types of situations, a simple "Thank you" works for me. Depending on the situation, the other person and I might get into a short conversation about the camera or photography, in general. My camera can be a real conversation piece.

I have to say that I cringe when I'm on vacation and I see other people, who are obviously on vacation, as well recording their vacation memories with a CELL PHONE!

I'm with you, Heather, on both counts... They probably don't know any better, and it does no good to stir things up with a (rude, sarcastic, snotty, etc - pick whatever word ya want) comback that is only going to make them think you're a real jerk.

And while cell phones have gotten a lot better in camera quality, they are still not a very good way to record special memories... Of course, I have a couple of pictures on my phone that show our son's college marching band. And a couple more that my wife took and sent to me from around Lake Tahoe (she was out having fun, I was sitting in a weeklong meeting talking software requirements...), so I can't be *too* hard on the cellphone types

I agree with you too Heather, that type of thing makes me laugh.. as well as the flashes going off during night games at the top tiers of a very large stadium I watch football at... The MCG 100,000 capacity and their little point and shoot flash will brighten the whole stadium

Someone at my work who knew I was into photography came and told me they were looking at a new point and shoot that had HD video recording... he then said "will that mean the photos are HD and will be better quality than my Pentax photos?"

I'm waiting for someone to say to me "Is that a zoom on your camera or are you just pleased to see me?"

Why do you guys/gals take it soo offensive? I am sure they mean the best, they just don't know how to say it phonically correct. Just take it as a compliment and leave it like that.
What about photography philosopher that says "the camera is an extension of themselves?
+1... But I think I'll start adopting "yeah, it's a pentax" comment =)
