Always great artists at the Montreal Jazzfest I've been checking it out for as long as I can remember.

I can't really suggest packages though as there are SO many awesome free outdoor shows that I've never paid for an indoor show.

They literally shut down 2-3 city blocks in the downtown core for the whole festival and set up massive stages. They have 5-6 stages with all sorts of different styles, but my preference is usually to catch the shows on the Blues stage.

They have outdoor shows all day and evening long. The evening shows are PACKED solid with people.

By the way, as discussed at the last Montreal-Pentaxian get together (at the Botanical Gardens), the next get together is most likely to be at the JazzFest so if anyone is in town for that event keep an eye on the Get Together subsection of this forum.

The Jazz Fest is awesome. I've been going for years, and the only thing I've had to pay for (usually) is beer. There are free shows at just about every street corners. If you like street photography, the opportunities are super ( and I don't mean K 100 D Super). And the music is not bad.

There is a decent shed in my backyard. You could even get free transportation to and from Montréal.

I could give you a few suggestions if I had an idea of how much you are expecting to pay. You can get rooms at $1000.00 a night if that is what you want (yes French Canadians are a greedy bunch).

$1000 a night? That would be at the Westin in Complexe Desjardins (freshly renovated rooms since the fire we had there last week ) Hotel room with a view of the festival... the "cheap rooms" are probably $1000 a night there.

Unfortunately most decent hotels that are downtown are extremely expensive during the Jazzfest. For something remotely affordable (and decent) you'll probably have to go into the suburbs.

I envy you - the list of cats is incredible: Wayne Shorter, Ornette Coleman, Joshua Redman . . . . . (you can tell I was a sax man). But also, I notice that Patricia Barber will appear - she's an amazing singer/pianist with a clear new direction with both standards and her own stuff. Wow . . . . wish I could be there.

Hey, Jer,

What about sailing up the St Lawrence river and assist the festival. On the way, you could visit the Louisbourg Fortress (out of this world, if you like history) and the fortified city of Québec. Both are worth a good visit, along with Old Montréal and the Jazz fest.

My boat is a bit too modest for that voyage - 'course there's always airplanes.

For myself, I'm not to comfy on water. To each his own...

Woops - I wasn't clear; I was talking about grabbing a commercial flight.

I am jealous, however. I'd love to take up personal aviation, but there's room and dollars for only so much and my bucket's pretty full!

If ever I go down your part of the world (it does happen once in a while), I'll send you a PM to take you on a ride for a private lesson.
