Anyone notice the new Sony's?

With all the buzz with the K-7, I had not seen a post about the new entry level Sonys.

Now I understand that everyone has their own idea of a good looking camera, but these things are the ugliest DSLR's I have ever seen.

So ugly I felt it was worth a new thread.

Here is the link:

Sony launches Alpha 230, Alpha 330 and Alpha 380: Digital Photography Review

Ugly. Yikes.

They do look a bit like toy cameras. Or the kind of toy that you would float in the bath if you were a nerd.

I can imagine that they will appeal to a lot of newcomers though. They have that generic sleek look about them.

there's no news because there's nothing innovative about the new cameras
rehash on an old concept

Does it become prettier after use?

no.

They're basically exactly the same models with a new shell and interface.

I think the "copper" one is kinda hawt, but in general the design doesn't do much for me.

Urghh!
I thought I knew Sony for good taste in design as known for their celphone cameras which look very well designed.
Now, with these, I must guess that they replaced or booted out their original Industrial Design employees!
They must've gotten some new guys to do this!
Sony, trying to re-invent themselves again.

It looks like the end of the Minolta look DSLR's. Sony is making the look their own.

These new cameras have lines that remind me of some of the rangefinders from the 60' & 70's. The texture looks like what was used on the Yashica GS.

Kind of a strange blend of retro and modern.

I am curious as to the function & feel of the grip and fwd dial. The Dial and shutter look too far back to me. But as Gooshin says, who knows until you try it.

I still think they got too much ugly.

The problem is there is very little product differentiation between the Sony models that for the average consumer, it can be a bewildering task to pick the one with the right feature set. Like mobile phones in general today, there is considerable feature overlap that blurs the distinction between one model and another. Inevitably this leads to a very short model life, which is not good for the end user.

I usually don't see much difference in the look of (D)SLRs. You've seen one, you've seen them all. However, these Sonys do look silly in the dpr picture. Like somebody wearing a funny hat.

Sony is a copycat. This strategy is really the monopoly of Pentax

It looks like you're gonna have to stretch your index finger waaaay back to use the front dial.

Either that or get used to spinning the dial with your first knuckle joint.

Wait, A380? Does it hold 400 passengers?

This is exactly how I felt about these when I first saw them. It's almost like they want to fail.

I mean, honestly? This is what they come up with? Next time someone is going to whine about Pentax releasing bodies in white and olive green and whatnot... Remember how much worse it could be.
