The age of the OS is almost over. Soon, we'll just be booting from the BIOS into a browser. What OS does my freshly ordered K-7 run? Who knows, who cares?
My OS progression has been: Mac, Linux, then XP. XP has the Oxford Dictionary, Dragon Naturally speaking and is finally stable. If Linux had those two programs, I would immediately switch back because I hate the concept of proprietary software. But, I've become practical in my old age.

I'm curious to see how many people that don't use a computer end up voting in this poll.
Well, if someone does not use computer, he can't participate in this poll. Therefore I find very strange that someone does not use computer, yet managed to participate in this poll

I really see your point about linux. I have also try get into it, but I need a lot of time.... I time that I can't afford today.

Hey!!

How about make a linux-photographer-version that are just for photographers.
I mean, what can be better then a OS for just us??

And in the same way have a free OS that are created just for our needs..

Any comments about that beauty thought?
You don't need a photo version of Linux. You need a decent Linux-compatible Photoshop release.

CS3 on XP for the most part. I run Sun Sparc at home ...at work it's often "System 5 UNIX" (Sun / HP-UX and AIX) but not for pics....I would be interested in knowing a good graphic program for Sparc Solaris.....

yeah...i guess you are right. But I mean a linux version created to get a better workflow for a photographer.

Os x and windows and most of the linux/unix are not specialisised for photographers.

I mean a real OS photographer !

Many places still do not have fast and reliable internet wifi connections to be able to adopt 'cloud-based' computing - the demise of the OS may take a long time, I think.

Just curious, but were you "fired" or were you downsized?

I'm actually waiting for Win7 to come out before I upgrade my main computer with something a little more powerfull.

Pat

Do not wait! I've been test driving Windows 7 RC for 3 weeks now, and I couldn't be more pleased. Apart from my network card refusing to work (already been fixed by the following release, and it only affected some nVIDIA Ethernet controllers), my ride has been as smooth as silk. Not a single crash; everything works like a charm.

Almost everything

I develop cross-platform software and also linux-based server software, so at work I use the following operating systems (in approximate order of usage frequency):

Ubuntu linux 64 bit (main workstation)
debian linux (several versions)
Mac OS X 10.5
OpenBSD
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows Vista 64 bit
Solaris

For my personal use, including photography work, I almost exclusively use my MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5.7 (which runs several linux and windows versions in virtual machines, too).

that seams like a lot of OS!!

I thinking about go linux on my PC at home...I have vista today, but since microsoft fired me I will change all my software belonging to them!

Do you have any good tips about some good and stable linux? I have heard a lot about abuntu. Could that be a good choice?

Today I run macbook pro, PC-vista in house and my girlfriends laptop-lord linux (spanish-swedish version) actually a very good one.

I feeling most confortable working in OS leopard

I can't hold it in any more.

Stop calling windows machines PC's you are completely wrong and are showing just how ignorant you are. A PC is a personal computer not a machine that has windows on it. And more to the point IBM invented the PC. SO STOP CALLING THEM PC'S.

If microsoft says something there is a very high chance it wrong.

I fell better for that and normal service will be resumed shortly.
