What about going up towards Putnam/Dutchess county? Try Peekskill/Fishkill/ Hopewell junction. There's a nice BB in Cold Spring and the shooting is spectacular.

I used to work (for two years) very near Rhinebeck 30+ years ago and loved it. Here are some of my favorites from back then.

A lovely inn (not a B&B) with excellent food.

Don't miss the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. Fantastic, flying WWI airplanes.

Norrie Point is beautiful.

Likewise, Norrie Point Marina is very nice. I used to hang out and watch the ships come up the Hudson.

You could go to the Vanderbilt Estate in Hyde Park (not far at all). Skip the house (too much, too big, too cold), the grounds are fantastic:

FDR's place is also in Hyde Park:

Woodstock is just across the river:

Enough of my reminiscing. Have fun.

Small world! I just booked a long weekend after Labor Day at Lake Taghkanic State Park in Columbia County.
I grew up in Queens and now live on Long Island, but I have vacationed Upstate my whole life.
There's so much to see and do in the nearby Hudson River Valley I hardly know where to start.
PM with more specific requirements if you would like my recommendations...

Can't remember if it's open all the way but you could follow the NY aqueduct stopping at different spots along the way. Also depending on when you go there is great shooting at Croton Reservior. I've got a few really good shots from there and it was a favorite when I lived in Yonkers. There's also a castle around the Newberg Beacon bridge I think. Castle Rock? Shot that a couple years ago. If you start out by car you could go to Long Lake. Use to camp there as a kid. It's above Tupper Lake.
