Pentax on the Appalachian Trail

I convinced a former student of mine to pick up a K200D to use in photo documenting his solo trek up the 2175 mile Appalachian Trail this summer. My convincing arguments were that he'd get the best possible pictures to remember his once-in-a-lifetime journey in a compact, weather resistant package that used easily obtainable AA batteries. He is 300 miles in. Check out his Flickr stream if you are interested in his journey.

Cheers!

Thanks for the link. I never got to make that adventure myself so following Jacob is almost as good and a LOT easier. A fine idea you had!

Yeah. Jacob and I were in the industrial design curriculum together at Auburn University. He mentioned his desire to hike the AT and I told him to go for it! Wish I had taken the opportunity to do it 15 years ago back before I had a wife, kids, car payments, a mortgage, etc. all tying me down.

I'd probably take my Hexar AF and shoot Kodachrome 64.

That might make uploading photos to Flickr periodically along the way a bit of a challenge

Oh, I'm glad he's sharing his adventure online... doing the AT is on my list of things "to do before I die".

Anyone hiking the Appalachian Trail shouldn't be in such a rush.

Not so. He got a late start due to the fact that he hung around for graduation. Most people started close to a month before he did!

Mine is to float the Mississippi. Too lazy for a 2000+ mile hike.

When passing through a town completed rolls are mailed to Dwayne's.
Processed slides are returned to someone who would scan and upload them.

The reward for waiting a bit longer for the results is that Kodachrome slides
are of higher quality and will last much longer. Advantage: Old technology.

How do you retrieve files from your old 5-1/4" floppies nowadays (if they're still readable)?

Ah, but that's what online backup is for.
