National Parks free entrance this weekend. 20/21 June 2009

I was listening to 850 KOA and they were saying there is no entrance fee to all National Parks this weekend. Just thought I would give you all a heads up. This is all National Parks in the US.

You should pop over here - entrance free to National Parks all the time! In fact I never knew you guys charged for it, seems kinda weird to me, not having been brought up with it.

They'd charge for the air that we breathe if they could. In fact, I think the only reason they don't is because they'd get sued over the quality and contaminants.

National Parks are free this weekend here too, at least most of them, just like every other day of the week.

Mind you, I'm sure other Park agencies would like the budget the USNPS gets buy on.

Dunno what it's like here. Haven't been to one in ages. I think it's free.

In NSW and a few other states, though, it's $275 if you wanna take photos, and sell them. Licencing varies state to state.

Which is ridiculous, as Ken Duncan points out - most of the damn places wouldn't be national parks if it weren't for photographers.

Yep,

And you would need your Au $10 mil insurance to go with that. It would cost more than $275 just to administer that license...

Most NPS sites around New York City charge no entrance fee.

There is no charge to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park either regardless of day of the week or year. If there was, it would revert.

Apparently entrance fees are not nearly enough to cover costs. National parks are probably near the same economic condition as state parks...

IMO we should spend less on bombs and fully fund parks.
Which on PentaxForums will no doubt be called socialism...

Well, for what its worth, I think US National Parks are great and well run. I have been fortuneate to visit Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Zion, Bryce Canyon and Yellowstone.

I have always purchased a multi park type pass (is it an Eagle pass??) and have admired the way things are done and the facilities provided. Given the number of people that visit these parks they (National Parks Service) have a huge task. No doubt there could be improvements, but hey, no-ones perfect.

One of my bucket list items is to get back to many of the parks mentioned above and spend some real quality time in them, rather than the 'flying' visits I have done in the past, plus the Redwoods, Crater lake & Rocky Mtns NP.
We were fortuneate to spend a week in & around Yellowstone....I think one could spend a lifetime just there alone!!

If you visit a Park in NSW in Australia, you are expected to stop and pay a fee at an "honesty box" arrangement and then carry the receipt with you. You can also buy an annual pass. Not sure what the other states do, but sure as god made little green apples, if they can find a way charge you...they will.
Cheers
Grant

Teddy Roosevelt and Lincoln were pro-park & National Forest. We could cut international aide by 75% as far as I'm concerned to fund the parks. However, our Military is kind of like an insurance policy. If crap happens, your glad you got it.
