wait times depend on where your doctor is, and when you want the appointment.

i have been to the doctor once in the last 5 years, i got an appointment scheduled for 1 week after the fact.

if you have something urgent, there are always walk in clincs, i have been 4 times int he last 5 years (twice for myself, and twice with friends), we were looked at within an hour

one time i drove my friend to the emergency at 3AM after she fell down the stairs in a drunken stupor (stupid bitch, i lost alot of sleep that night), she was couging up blood (which ended up being just a bitten tongue) but i wasnt taking chances, she was looked at within an hour and had a full head scan and chest x-ray done.

however i think the biggest issue arises when you want something done for your own peace of mind that is not mandated by a doctor. If you dont have a doctor order for an MRI, you can be waiting for MONTHS, or just go down to the states and pay 300 dollars...

but if you NEED something, then doors open up pretty quickly for you.

Question about Canadian Health Care for you. How long of a wait if you just need a regular/follow up appointment?
Honestly it depends for what...

We have some medical domains where we have a serious lack of personnel, so in those domains it takes a lot of time.

In others there is barely any wait.

I had a problem a few years ago where I paralised my left arm. I was heavily into bodybuillding and just went too far. Woke up one morning and my arm wasn't working anymore.

I went straight to a local walk-in clinic and was seen by a doctor within 2 hours. He refered me to a sports medecine specialist 2 days later. That specialist couldn't figure out the problem and refered me to a neurologist the next day. I started physio that same day. Ended up being pinched nerves.

The only time I had to pay for anything was the psysio because I chose to go to a private physio clinic near my home and didn't want to go to the government run place downtown (which would have been free).

Now I've had mostly good experiences with the health system here, but it doesn't mean the system is perfect. Many procedures (especially elective and cosmetic surgeries) have long wait times, and some categories of specialists are in short supply.

On the other hand, we do have a parallel private system where we can go for faster service. I can choose to go see a private doctor, specialist or technician, I can choose to have tests and some surgeries done in a private clinic. All for pay of course, but thats why we have supplemental medical insurance at work.

Thanks Pat. Just that we keep hearing about you wait months for an appointment up there. And how you could die before you get what you need. I just wanted the info without really an argument of it. So thanks again.

No the media are all about the Obama.

Have you actually read a book? And I'm not talking about Archie's Digest or Nancy Drew.

I do read and have read quite a bit in my life. She's actually a good writer. You don't like her because of your liberalism.

I dislike her because she's a hack philosopher and a poor technical and stylistic writer, IN MY OPINION.

I actually started this thread because of the absurdity of PETA. Not the Obama.
PETA is just doing it the get PETI off of their back. One of my colleagues and mentors wrote a letter to the editor of the Knoxville, News-Sentinel, in 1998 using a Psuedonym of Harvey Foonman.

QuoteQuote:
Last week, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) called on Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials to ban trout fishing, arguing that fish feel pain and that angling is violent.

So on Friday, a group calling itself PETI — People for the Ethical Treatment of Insects — condemned PETA.

“Those murdering trout devour millions of mayflies, mosquitoes and other innocent insects every day,” says PETI spokesman Harvey Foonman.

The release continues: “As PETA states, there are many who believe that fish are sentient. That makes them responsible for their actions. Insects are innocent — they don’t even have brains. That makes them our natural constituency — and, you’d think, PETA’s too.

“If PETA had a heart, they’d be finding a way to train these trout out of their horrible insectivorous ways. Or distribute tofu pellets to mountain streams.”

The group’s motto: “Insects are just like people, except for having six legs, an exoskeleton and no central nervous system.”

I was going to say something funny but you'd probably use it as an excuse to bomb Iran.

Let's not go there. There is a lot to criticize about your health system, too. At least, in Canada, everybody has a chance.
I wonder how many people realize that legally a hospital in the US CANNOT deny you medical coverage based upon ability to pay.

Yes, I read Anthem and about half of Atlas Shrugged before giving up in disgust.

I'm about half way through Atlas and love it. Just wish I had more time. Back in the day that sucker would have been done in 2 nights. Maybe one. Now I have 10-20 minutes a day.

Yeah, I'm slowing down lately, too. Read 56 books last year (warning: I'm probably off by one or two if you check Goodreads to fact check me) and I've finished maybe 10 so far this year.
