Seems to be just like Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow: VFX crap.

Epic special effects to be sure. Hopefully the screen play will be a little stronger than either of the other two flicks from the same guys ("Independence Day" and "The Day After Tomorrow").

Independence Day won a Oscar for best special FX .. I thought it was a good movie except for one actor. Loggia sucked.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought "Dear lord, please take my life before they do another sequel to 2001." Don't get me wrong, 2001 is probably the best SciFi movie ever. It is certainly my favorite. 2010 on the other hand left a lot to be desired, despite some phenomenal performances. Another sequel made today would be an abomination. Stanley Kubrick would never be able to make 2001 today were he still alive.

When I saw it I thought to myself I thought, "great, another thing that we should be frightened about."

Maybe Al Gore will show up in the movie riding a cloud saying that he invented the end of the world and it's all due to global warming.

You know, as a Solaris fan I am totally with you except, except... I have a soft spot for 2010. I saw it when it came out. What a lot of people couldn't know today is that this was released right before Christmas. It cannot be compared to 2001 but if you look at it in that light it is lovely. 2010 is a great Christmas flick.

I enjoyed it so much I went back to the theatre the next week and watched it again. The wrap-around screen and super sound system helped. The spacewalk thing between the two space vehicles is dizzying on a screen too wide to take in all at once.

And who wouldn't want dolphins in their living room?

Delete the "probably".

I admire Emmerich for his ability to make Hollywood movies like no other German can. However, his problem is his movies are even more Hollywood than Hollywood movies themselves. He consistently overdoes it. Good for the box office, bad for the movies.

"Independence Day" was dripping with patriotism. "Godzilla" had great potential but suffered from too much action and too little mysticism and the usual Hollywood Holes of Logic in the plot.
My favourite of him is still "Stargate" despite the unfortunate occupation with the army.

I'll have to see 2012 for the special effects but I already know I'll have to suffer through some tacky Hollywood characters and plot.
