I feel like sh**

I had to have my dog put down due to kidney failure. After twelve years, he was like the kids we never had. Life is a bitch...

Sorry to hear that Yves...

At 12 your dog had a long (and I have no doubt) good life in a good home.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Grief is an unkind companion and the healing often too slow.

I'm so sorry Yves, I know what that does to you, I've been in that position too many times myself.
I always console myself with the knowledge that after so many years of joy, loyalty and love, it's my chance to repay all that by bestowing a sense of dignity on my pets final breath.

Take care my friend.

I had to do the same with my first dog about six years back. (We rescued him from a shelter; I encourage everyone to rescue pets, rather than buy them from pet stores).

He got a tumor or something and ended up having difficulty breathing. It was tough seeing a Jack Russell, who was once the terror of our backyard enemies, so frail. It was also tough seeing my best friend, who used to play basketball and tennis with me, who would play tug of war with my leg while growling with a tennis ball in his mouth to keep from accidentally nipping me, in such pain. I swear he waited until I came back from college on break before really getting bad.

I cried the whole way in the car while I sat in the back seat with him covered in a blanket and in a milk crate. I cried when they carried him away from the front counter out to the back. I also cried when we took him back in a black bag.

He's now six feet under in a corner of our backyard, forever the king of the backyard he ruled over his entire life. I made a tombstone for him.

Yves, I hope it doesn't look like I'm hijacking your thread. I just wanted to share my similar experience with you (and everyone else).

Sorry, one more. By the way, it's amazing how even technically "bad" old images can mean so much and be so much more beautiful than today's crisp, sharp, technically correct image.

There is no greater or more loyal friend than ones pet, particularly a dog. He will stand beside you through thivk and thin.
So I can understand your feeling of loss.
My sincere thoughts are with you, and I pray that time heals the loss for you.

I'm sorry for your loss.
We also had to make the same decision for the same reason last December.
Our dear old 'Lady' was in the last stages of renal failure and it was too agonizing to watch.
We all cried. I even get a little misty now as I write this.
She had a very unique personality and we used to take her everywhere.
It really hurt but we had to do it so she wouldn't suffer any more.

Little did I know but the vet clinic took an imprint of one of her paws at the time. They made a cast of her paw imprint in plaster of paris. My wife took this to a place that makes monuments and headstones . Just last week she brought home a beautifully 'garden stone' with the paw imprint and the words "Lady. Our Family Dog". She placed it under a shady tree in the back yard.

She was a great friend and I miss her like crazy.
