I have been a quiet fan of Lukather for a long time. Although I do not have any of his solo albums, I often find myself listening for him and reading liner notes in the thousands of recordings and sessions he has been involved in.
For me the last ten years or so he has been involved in a few of the "all star" tributes where the various chosen vocalists really distract from the music. There were some Pink Floyd tributes Steve played on where everything was going not too badly until the vocalist showed up and I was like, "I can't listen to this."
In the past two years though I think I found more surprising appearances of Lukather... I need to get some of his solo albums. There is a lot of Toto music that I really don't like but I have tremendous respect for Lukather's work effort and the estimated thousands of sessions and maybe hundreds of artists he has worked with. He certainly seems like a professional and gives great results.
