Thanks to YouTube, I discovered the Angels out of Australia, albeit 35 years too late. Just like that I lost an hour listening to this absolutely rocking live show.

My 1972 copy of Can't Buy a Thrill,

I wonder were it not for The Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs what would they have called themselves? This cover is full of innuendos I love this album cover.

Tom Waits The asylum years

Sitting with a Gin at half past midnight listening to this wishing I was in some NYC bar at closing time whilst the barfly was playing

Last night, my friend and fellow music aficianado introduced me to an artist I'd never heard of - a songwriter / musician called Richard Dawson, who hails from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, not far from me. His music is quite difficult to classify - it's sort of modern folk / folk-rock, with a strangely (but, I'm convinced, quite intentionally) naive and conversational lyrical style and phrasing, presented in his regional accent, and subject matter that deals with social issues and banality of modern life, with the occasional humorous observation to lift the darkness. Well, that's how I hear him, at least.

When I first started listening to this song, I was unsure what to make of it - especially the lyrics and his vocal style (he's no singer in the traditional sense)... but it quickly grew on me. The chorus is masterful, IMHO. I urge you to play it right the way through at least once before making up your own mind...

It's an odd combination of things that works, it made me smile even with the subject matter. I can't imagine watching this on stage though.

I know exactly what you mean My mate has seen him play live (with his band) a couple of times and thought he was great. He did a BBC Radio 6 Music session that's available on YouTube, part of which is this song. It's just him singing and playing acoustic guitar through an electric guitar tube amp. It's sparse, but compelling...

I am glad I listened to it once, but not so charmed that I am likely to listen to it twice. I could only imagine seeing him live if the crowd was good spirted and singing along. The singer's voice reminds me of both Richard Thompson and Pete Townsend. The music track itself is well played and arranged, though perhaps a bit too long. THe video was very good, well thought out and well shot.

I would consider sponsoring him for the London Marathon, running a marathon is a great goal to pursue, and he would support a worthy cause as well.

Some regular and strenuous physical exercise makes for a good routine, I swim 1600 meters 3-5 times a week, it really has done me a lot of good both physically and mentally. Reference to this activity also makes a suitable segue into my next song recommendation.
