I liked 'After the Storm' or whatever it was they did at Eurovision 2014.

Simple and straightforward, no sequins, wind machines or transgender performers anywhere, very un-Eurovision, and naturally they lost. :-)
It's called "Calm After The Storm". Yeah, it was nice. We almost won. The Eurovision song contest is riddled with politics though. Ukraine got lots of votes due to the situation on Crimea at the time.

I really like Ilse DeLange. Even before The Common Linnets, she was really well known here in The Netherlands, but I think not so much abroad. I do like her country songs more than rock, so I'm glad The Common Linnets kind of returns to that.

Anyway, just reinstalled the Spotify app after activating the premium trial and setting streaming quality to "extreme". Sound quality seems to be good now. Currently listening to the album "The Last Ship" by Sting.

Great band, NakedGun. The film Trainspotting was where they first got my attention.

Heard "Dark Train" again, yesterday, and thought about your post on this film's soundtrack.
Don't know why I didn't think of it at the time, but should have remarked about their song "Rez" which is featured briefly during a dance club scene in the Cameron Crowe-directed film
"Vanilla Sky" but, alas, does not carry this tune on the soundtrack CD.

Recently got their 1992-2012 anthology, and that has a few I'd not heard before.

Been listening to a lot of Serge Gainsbourg in the car lately.

Loving it, so smooth, so relaxing.
Granted, my French is very limited, so for all I know he could be singing about a bout of food poisoning, but meh, say anything in french and it sounds romantic.

More Shadows. This is Apache from 1960:

The lead guitarist with the Buddy Holly glasses is Hank Marvin, one of the most influential early rock guitarists.
That smoking (literally!) bass player is Jet Harris (RIP) ...

He was a subversive songwriter, singing about everything from incest to alcoholism, HKS.

There was a good biopic made in 2010 covering the part of his life where this unlikely-looking guy hooked up with Bridgette Bardot. He seemed to have a history of, how shall we put it, "Punching above his weight"?

Aussie multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey (collaborator with Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, et al) has recorded two English language albums of Gainsbourg covers - you should be able to buy them via iTunes.

I figured as much about Serge, I've read about a few of the songs but havent looked up the directly translated lyrics.

Thanks for the tip re: Mick Harvey, i'll look on the shelf for the disc, my girlfriend is a massive Nick Cave fan and so we've got a lot of his stuff, and also a lot of stuff from those he worked with so it's probably there somewhere.

Cool.

Harvey and Cave have played together since their school days.
