My weekend was spent in the garage doing some necessary vehicle maintenance (two- & four-wheeled) and cycled through The Field, Stars of the Lid, Stereolab, and Biosphere.

The Red Krayola-God Bless The Red Krayola And All Who Sail With It

Red Krayola (formerly The Red Crayola) was a psychedelic experimental rock band from Houston, Texas, formed by art students at the University of St. Thomas (Texas) in 1966. The band was led by singer/guitarist and visual artist Mayo Thompson, along with drummer Frederick Barthelme (brother of novelist Donald Barthelme) and Steve Cunningham. Their work prefigured punk, post-punk, indie rock and the no wave scene in 1980s New York City.

They made noise rock, psychedelia and occasionally folk/country songs and instrumentals in a DIY fashion, an approach that presaged the lo-fi aesthetic of many 1990s US indie rock groups. Reviewing the band has produced conflicted results - in an extremely positive review from Pitchfork Media, critic Alex Lindhardt wrote "It's a band that has no idea how to play its instruments. In fact, they don't even know what instruments are, or if the guitarist has the ability to remain conscious long enough to play whatever it is a 'note' might be." He added, "This is a band that was paid ten dollars to stop a performance in Berkeley. If Berkeley's not having it, you know you're in for rough sledding." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Krayola

Mark Deming of AllMusic wrote "God Bless the Red Krayola and All Who Sail with It bears precious little resemblance to anything else that appeared at the time; it would take a few decades of post-punk experimentalism before Mayo Thompson's vision would have a truly suitable context, though the album's playful undercurrent goes a long way toward making these tiny shards of sound go down easily for the musically open-minded

Beggars Opera - Pathfinder

This band was from Scotland, their name is derived from a novel by the poet John Gray in 1728. The musicians of BEGGARS OPERA were Martin Griffiths (vocals), Rick Gardiner (guitar and vocals), Alan Park (keyboards), Gordon Sellar (bass, acoustic guitar and vocals), Virginia Scott (Mellotron and vocals) and Raymond Wilson (drums and percussion). BEGGARS OPERA made a lot of records but remained acting in the shade of most progressive rock bands. BEGGARS OPERA discography (top albums), MP3, videos and reviews

Australia's Tommy Emmanuel showing the guitar as a percussion instrument. He's a country player, mainly, but did a bit of pop too, such as Dragon's 'Rain'.

A Italian Band of seventies that play Jazz Fusion with high quality. Very unusual to see a band with the exact same lineup not only change their band name 3 times but also change the style of music with each album. This album is very much in the Jazz / Rock / Fusion style. Etna were a band from Sicily who began with the name Flea In The Honey before shortening to Flea, then finally changing to Etna. They released an album under each moniker and each is a very different animal. The first was influenced by British hard rock and not very original nor beloved by progressive music fans. The second album as the band Flea was a huge jump in quality and moved firmly into RPI territory while still paying homage to hard guitar rock. Its long jamming suite is quite a monster treat for guitar lovers. Their third release as Etna was a complete change in style and prove the musicians capable artistic chameleons able to go in two different yet believable directions. An old favorite of mine, Meshell Ngedeocello who I had the pleasure of seeing live in a small club a couple of years ago. Amazing and versatile musician!

George Brigman - Jungle Rot

At age 18, the most a musician should ever hope for is an ill-fated, ramshackle band to fill backyards and basements, a pennant to someday pin on the brick wall of nostalgia. George Brigman wasn’t like most musicians. He came away from the latter part of his youth with an impressive lot of recordings pressed on his own imprint, Solid Records, and a legion of fans eager to get their hands on his tomes of blissful, bluesy sludge. RIP John Barry

More pre-Beatles British music from 1961, from one of the earliest "concept" albums Stringbeat:

Yes, that John Barry. He started out playing rock 'n' roll but over time his music became more cinematic.

This prolific composer scored many well-known films including Born Free, The Lion in Winter, Midnight Cowboy,
A Clockwork Orange, Walkabout, Out of Africa, Dances with Wolves etc. plus nearly a dozen 007 Bond films.

Allmusic review of Stringbeat by John Barry: http://www.allmusic.com/album/stringbeat-mw0000865206

And here's the original 1958 arrangement, later adapted for Stringbeat:

Haymarket square - Magic lantern

Haymarket Square was a Chicago-based psychedelic rock band in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their album, Magic Lantern, released in 1968, was pressed in an edition of 80 - 100 copies, and despite its rarity is well considered by fans of psychedelic rock music even today. The music of the album was used to accompany the Baron and Bailey Light Circus at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Magic Lantern was reissued on CD by Gear Fab Records in 2001. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haymarket_Square_%28band%29

For goodness sake, it's only April and we've lost another icon. His keyboard playing was inspired by Little Richard, his guitar work by Hendrix, his lyrics came from another planet, though (a purple one at that!):
