Haven't listened to this in *years*... What a brilliant song, I can barely believe it's 31 years old (I was 17 when this was released!! )...

Billy Bragg was something of a success here in his home country of England, though I don't know if he ever made it overseas (I'm guessing not, as his vocal style is very regional). Also, he was very political, and that generally puts me off artists... if I'm listening to music, I prefer not to be preached to about political values in between songs (though I'll suffer it in the lyrics ). That aside, he came out with a few classics, including this one.

Interesting fact: the additional guitar work (picking, lead and other good stuff) was by none other than Johnny Marr

I've included the lyrics too, as Bragg has a very regional Essex accent

Lyrics

Shirley,
It's quite exciting to be sleeping here in this new room
Shirley,
You're my reason to get out of bed before noon
Shirley,
You know when we sat out on the fire escape talking
Shirley,
What did you say about running before we were walking

Sometimes when we're as close as this
It's like we're in a dream
How can you lie there and think of england
When you don't even know who's in the team

Shirley,
Your sexual politics have left me all of a muddle
Shirley,
We are joined in the ideological cuddle

I'm celebrating my love for you
With a pint of beer and a new tattoo
And if you haven't noticed yet
I'm more impressionable when my cement is wet

Politics and pregnancy
Are debated as we empty our glasses
And how i love those evening classes

Shirley,
You really know how to make a young man angry
Shirley,
Can we get through the night without mentioning family

The people from your church agree
It's not much of a career
Trying the handles of parked cars
Whoops, there goes another year
Whoops, there goes another pint of beer

Here we are in our summer years
Living on icecream and chocolate kisses
Would the leaves fall from the trees
If i was your old man and you were my missus

Shirley,
Give my greetings to the new brunette

I've been enjoying some of the music I heard in Tanzania recently. A lot of pop I'm not that into but also some really nice more traditional stuff like this.

Aside from the excessive use of AutoTune (which seems to be rife throughout the music industry globally), I absolutely *love* this!!!

You've helped me discover someone and something new to me... thanks, Matt !!

You're welcome! I feel the same about Autotune but this stuff still makes me move and elevates my mood!

I totally agree! You can't help but feel good listening to it. And the video is superb - really well-produced, great colours, sexy, funny, wicked dancing, and cool in a very tongue-in-cheek way...

Yup, big thumbs up from me, for sure - thanks again

His Eighties albums sold a bit here in Australia, and he has toured a couple of times, including earlier this year.

American members might know him through his Woody Guthrie covers with Wilco.

This is another collaboration with Johnny Marr:

So... last night I went to see Nik Kershaw in concert. Well, not so much a concert, but a very intimate gig

Those of you who were (or are still) fans of the 80s music scene will remember him - "Wouldn't it be good", "I won't let the sun go down" etc. Well, these days he plays to smaller but just as dedicated crowds. And he generally plays an acoustic set, which includes re-worked versions of his old numbers along with some newer ones.

What can I say? It was a *superb* gig. I can't pick a favourite from the night, but this was his closing number - a cover of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish"... just Nik, a guitar, and a loop pedal.

Video taken at the gig (not by me!)....

I saw U2 in concert earlier last week so I have been listening to them repeatedly since.
They put on a great show and if any of you are undecided as to if you want to see them on this tour, get tickets! You will not regret it!

My tastes and likes can be and usually are, all over the place but right now listening to Annie Staninec, tho primarily known as an amazing fiddle player this is another side of her talent. She only has one cd released so far and virtually no official videos but we can hope some day. Anyways here's one for you all showcasing her on the Banjo in the old clawhammer style, think she nailed both the feel and sound of this song. Had the unexpected pleasure of hearing her for the first time over 10 years back by accident at a street fair and was amazed by her. Later on I ran into her that day and we wandered around a bit and chatted, very down to earth and humble.
