I think Billy might have "borrowed" the idea for this song from REM,(and they did it quicker and better

Wow, I never really realised that WDSTF came 2 years after ITEOTWAWKI. I always thought of Billy Joel as such an 80's icon, while REM was so timeless. WDSTF certainly hasn't aged as well, not that it's a bad song, but it's dated by its more topical subjects, pop culture references, and polished sound, so it comes across more of a novelty song these says. To be fair, ITEOTWAWKI isn't REM's most timeless song either, but their brand of alt-rock and more obscure lyrical references and metaphors still sounds as fresh as ever to me.

There are a number of youtube videos showing people having a first reaction to Pink Floyd, most of them seem to be persons of colour who are normally associated with completely different genres of music. Worth a watch, although it can be a little difficult to follow the podcast for the first couple of minutes the look on their faces as something like "Comfortably numb" is played is worth the time.

And you get the great music in the background!
