The rivalry of The Beatles and The Beach Boys in the mid sixties is well documented. They shared the same record label, and Lennon-McCartney were able to get hold of an advance copy of Pet Sounds. It confirmed their decision to stop touring and instead create songs that had too much delicacy or instrumentation to actually play live in a football stadium. McCartney in particular loved 'God Only Knows' and wrote 'Here, There and Everywhere' as a kind of tribute, with its elegant key changes and harmonies. But he got cheeky after a while and resorted to parody:
