Frankencamera and Pentax

I found this "Frankencamera," a science lab experiment, interesting in many ways, including the dynamic range discussion.

They're working on an open source camera. The dynamic range feature is being incorporated into the latest Pentax cameras. One must assume they know these features are already winding up in commercial products.

It sounds like these cameras are strictly for research projects. Let's hope camera companies are helping fund their work.

They are still approaching HDR from a sequential viewpoint. What is needed is the ability to gain all HDR data simultaneously, whether with parallel processors using one sensor or multiple sensors feeding into one processor. The key is simultaneous acquistion of data which does away with much of the problems currently tied to subject movement (wind, actual movement in the scene, lighting variations, etc.). Also the need for tripods to get good HDR capture would be reduced.

I won't take these guys seriously until they put at least an APS-C sized sensor in their "camera." Right now it's using one from a cell phone... One of the obvious problems with this is lenses. Easy enough to find 1mm lenses for P&S cameras, but who ever heard of a 1mm lens for an interchangable lens camera (not even the Pentax Auto 110 had anything that short).

I'd just like a camera maker to give the ability to script out a user made function. Not unlike Avisynth the video guys use.

brilliant. who will be the first to step to the plate? it is _inevitable_, history has proven it, and the early bird will get the worm.
