It's just I was tired of the whole Pavlovian response to "Socialism" back when we were still on a hair-trigger, Parallax.

'Anything but what big money and big religion wants is Godless Communism! Fear! Bust unions! And pay us to deny you health care! Blame government! Commies!'

It's pernicious. I'm not saying you invented it or anything, Parallax. It's just time in general that we get over it.

This convenient 'quote' reappearing, nor the fact it's not even true.. not surprising. (Seems to suit conservative fearmongers of today better than it ever would Soviet interests at the time, anyway.)

Khrushchev's actions warranted a hair trigger. I don't think JFK nor Bobby would share RML's sentiments one bit. JFK & LBJ had hair triggers for good reason. All one has to do is talk to a Korean vet and ask what dealing with the NK communists and Red Chinese was like to understand the threats were real. Eisenhower warned that the iron triangle would be a problem because they already were. However, just because the Iron Triangle exploited the situation doesn't make the situation any lest real.

Edit: Or to put a simply, the Soviets were held in check from the end of WWII until their collapse.

You do realize, don't you, that the Pavlovian Response worked only because the dogs were given actual food at the bell, don't you? If they had only been promised food Dr. Pavlov would not have made the history books. That would mean that the Pavlovian response to a Socialist threat would not have existed if the threat were not real.

Are you saying that capitalism will make people fall into line if given rewards for blind reactions to the 'bell?'

Was that good or bad? I forget.

Teabaggers... not to mention many others, get their 'rewards' for responding appropriately to the trigger words.

As for how long it'll actually 'feed' them, well. I suppose if that was going to work I wouldn't even care. But. It ain't gonna work. Never does.

No, I'm saying that the threat from the Soviet Union was very, very, real. The reaction to "the bell" was based on the reality of the times.

That's hardly in dispute, whatever you think of it, never mind bearing on the point.
