In reply to the story link Gooshin posted, this kind of thing could be avoided by placing a flat rate fee paid to attorneys for these type of cases. This is unlikely to happen for one simple reason. 90% of our elected officials are lawyers. A guy convicted of a murder isn't likely to have the means to pay the total bills the lawyers want even after his property and assets are seized. So they have this wonderful system in place to insure they can charge what they want and get paid in full no matter the outcome. Most of us consider that a conflict of interest. To the lawyer, it is called fair and equal treatment.
