We were so poor that Dad had to do a headspin on a box of Cheerios in front of the Goodwill for a slice of Wonderbread.

Far from it, in reality, all 'poor people' jokes aside. You paid for the advertising on those empty calories.

We were so poor, that my parents couldn't afford enough food for all of us kids to eat everyday. It was "first come, first served". If you were among the last to show up at the table, you didn't eat. So, for those of us who missed out on eating, my mom would just read us the recipes. My younger sister was a bit hard of hearing...she dang near starved to death!
