The New Decade!

You know, I didn't much expect to be psyched for the turn of the calendar, this year, but after a bit of rest, I'm feeling it.

Ten. Years. What the Hel was that, anyway? The end of the Nineties was such an optimistic time, then, wham. And though a lot of pretty good things have come of a lot of sucky situations this passing decade, ....what an ordeal. (Especially for a news junkie like me.)

Maybe we'll call it an awkward transition to the 21st century. The 'Aughts,' or 'Naughts.'

Ten years of collective poking and prodding at and screaming about the accumulated damage of the past millenium. The decade without a style, the decade without a zeitgeist worth naming... The decade of really surreal politics... the decade I lost my record collection and can fit most of a year's photo work in a small matchbox.

The year I deliberately bought a variable aperture zoom lens. How weird is *that?* It reminds me it's the decade I got my eyesight (and photography) back, one I depart with a freezer door full of film about enough functional gear to be going on with, for something... A nice relationship, some more of my civil rights in some places, somewhat less in others...

Let's see... My laptop's tenth birthday is probably coming up, (three cheers for this fellow, what a trooper.)

Mostly, though, I think it's the decade when half the world got online and beat all the pent-up arguments *to death.*

How'd your decade go, folks?

Overall, except for the fact that I didn't get any younger, or better looking, (or any smarter, some would argue ) it went pretty damned well.

There we go. Cheers. It's never too late to get smarter. Or maybe I'm just getting dumber on that particular point.

Overall all it was a good decade...

More travel in the last 10 years than the previous 30
The kids became adults
Still working for myself (started in 1998)
I lived to see 50 (at 20 I really had my doubts)
Bought my first brand spanking new car off the lot (will never do that again ha-ha)

On the down side well there is that whole retirement / investment thing that went to hell in a hand basket, but you can't really dwell on things beyond your control.

Glass was definitely half full for the 2000's

Well this decade is probably my best. Actually it is. Besides getting older and a little more in pain I just keep getting better looking all the time.

But with the birth of #4, my one and only, how could life be any better. So this is my best decade.

This decade's positives: I discovered I could buy vintage cameras, cheap. I got into digital SLR and medium format film. In a way, returning to some enthusiasms of my youth - photography, poetry, metaphysics, stuff like that. And I'm still employed, with positive equity in the house.

This decade's negatives: wife and son have chronic illnesses. Income and savings went way down. Discovered over 50 really does mean something. Maybe not over the hill, but the crest sure is starting to be visible

Overall, on balance, not so bad. Except the son's illness - chronic daily 24x7 migraine that no doctor or healer has been able to budge.

Haven't you read any of my posts last few days? Pretty much the worst case of gout I've ever had. Bedridden since 12/23

Nesster, you live in Joisey, waddid ya spect in that socialist state?

I'm sorry to hear about the health misfortunes, Nesster, they sound many. (Have you looked at the food allergies with your son's migraines? It sounds rather like soy or wheat protein problems: these are popping up all over the place these days. They're often a trial to track down, (and not much fun to find out about and live with) ...but they do crop up a lot, as something conventional Western medicine doesn't like to look at. )

Yeah, but you didn't say it was in your fingers. Seriously, I hope it remits quickly. I have never had it, but I know people who have and I wouldn't wish that on a liberal, let alone a fellow smart-ass conservative.

Also best wishes to George, who's still on ignore. Charming as it is to find out of your distress from someone who thinks 'liberals' might be worthy of such distress if he wasn't feeling particularly charitable.

At least you get spared the 'Get a job, you malingerer!' line.

Seriously, though. Let's try and be nice, here. As much as we can, anyway.

Guess I am still dealing with a child here. I think #4 is more an adult than you. Bless your heart.
