Well, here in Portugal, 3 places come to my mind:

- "Carne Assada" (portuguese for roasted meat)
- "Rata" (portuguese for "female rat" but also slang for "the main female reproductive organ")
- "Venda das Raparigas" (portuguese for "Girl Sale")

Yes, we are a weird country

I remember some little unincorporated towns in West Tennessee, once upon a time communities that were little more than a general store and a wide spot in the road and now most likely passed from the scene:

Frog Jump
Skullbone (from the bare knuckle boxing that was popular in the are
Goat City

One I like from Kentucky: "Sugartit"

For those of you not cultured enough to be familiar with the word "sugartit" it is butter and sugar placed in a rag and twisted up similar to a baker's confectionary bag. It was the long-ago po' folks version of the modern baby pacifier.

Not far from where I live we have a geographical area known as 五目牛 (gomeushi) which means "five-eyed cow". Sometimes I think I'd like to track down the story behind it. And other times I think some things are just more fun when you don't know.

Well, I believe this one is unique: Toad Suck

Google Maps link:

Toad Suck, AR - Google Maps

Toad Suck is in Perry County, in the Little Rock metro area. Local traditions say the community was named for early inhabitants - be they gamblers or river boatmen - who "sucked up whiskey like toads." The word "suck" in place names often refers to a salt lick or a channel of water.

Cheers,
Marc

Visit Morehead City NC quite often. Gotta love a town called Morehead City! Thought about getting a couple models to pose by the welcome sign on the highway , would make a great poster!

'Morehead City NC '

Sounds like a better place than Bullhead, Arizona

The pickup truck bumber sticker town motto is:
'A little bullhead is better than no head"

And over on my side of misery is Independence with its sister to the north Liberty. My favorite small-town Missouri name is Tightwad.

Dumas, Arkansas and the "Ding Dong Daddy Days" celebration is sort of funny. However about 2 years ago the town got creamed by a tornado.

Q "What's the weather like up there?"
A "It's gunda be windy, today tomorrow and the rest of the month!"

The reason I ask this, is that I heard of a town in Mississippi (a state in southern US for those non Americans out there) called Deelow, because it is so damn low that everytime the local river rises it floods out part of the town.

NaCl(but it's still a great sounding name)H2O
Actually, it is D'Lo, as if anyone cares. It is located in Simpson County and close to Jackson (the state capital). I grew up about 90 miles south of there.
