Is Photography a Men Only Hobby?

I just remember just one female participant in this forum. Makes me wonder if photography is a men only hobby? (running on the thin ice is always exciting)

Doesn't your first sentence contradict the second?

While Camera equipment hoarding and gear discussions may be male-dominated (i.e. forums such as this), I think there are many great female photographers out there as well who spend most of their time actually practising the craft!

No, exceptions don't break the rules. But I might be wrong, we'll see maybe other gender(s) are not an exception.

Personally I like to see women in front of the camera, more than behind it.

But, I couldn't care less what gender the photographer is.

Helloooooo!!!!
Forums are an interesting thing really. The men do all the talk talk talking. Sort of an opposite thing to the claims in real life when women often are compared to a flock of clucking hens with all their yakking and gabbing ya know?

(Mr. Cash - where's your He-Man-Womens-Haters Club pic? )

C'mon guys!
Most communications these days are continuously heckled by feminists or machoists. Can't you enjoy your hobby without introducing this unnecessary analysis. Next thing we will need CNN to analyze how many black people, blonds, immigrants, middle class, Mexicans etc., etc enjoy photography or talking about it.
Who cares!!

Well, I don't think anybody cares seriously, but curiosity is in the human nature you know, beside a lot of polls I see are just for fun among comrades, nothing else, at least I take it this way.

When I was growing up my mom was the photographer in my family.

My own observation and experience tells me women do at least half of the photography.
Surely those who market Kodak or Fuji have some data on this.

I also believe that in general women are far less likely to worship photography,
spend more money than they should on it,
and waste their time overanalyzing and arguing about it in online forums!

Perhaps it will result in some interesting discussion but the question posed in the OP title is really very silly.

I think men are generally more gadget oriented and being attracted to photographic gears even if they aren't genuinely interested in photography. Also, almost all photographic hardwares have been designed in such ways that suit the taste of men more, I think. I dare say that the majority of camera owners are interested in photography because of the gears, instead of vise versa. Women like gadgets too, but more on fashion accessories instead of the boring cameras & lenses. To women, cameras are merely tools.

My Kids (both girls 7 & 10) love grabbing the camera and snapping anything from the dog to the washing on the line!
